Buena Vista's Glenn and Dubuque's Cavanagh Named American Rivers Conference Athletes of the Week

Performers of the Week Announced in Three Sports

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced that Buena Vista University baseball player Dalton Glenn (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and University of Dubuque softball player Cayla Cavanagh (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) have been named American Rivers Conference Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 27, 2022. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in baseball, softball, and men’s tennis.

Female Athlete of the Week – Softball – Position Player of the Week17347
Cayla Cavanagh, University of Dubuque
Jr., C, Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah
  • The Spartans went 1-1 against No. 22-ranked Wartburg College on the weekend.
  • The junior catcher batted .500 with two homeruns over the two games.
  • Game 1: Dubuque 5, Wartburg 14 – 1-for-2 (.500), 1 R, 1 H, 1 RBI, 1 HR
  • Game 2: Dubuque 9, Wartburg 8 – 2-for-4 (.500), 2 R, 2 H, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 putouts
  • The Spartans started off conference play 1-1 and improved to 13-3 overall.
  • The Roscoe, Illinois native is collecting her first-career Position Player of the Week honor.

Male Athlete of the Week – Baseball – Pitcher of the Week17346
Dalton Glenn, Buena Vista University
Jr., RHP, Omaha Neb./Millard West
  • Glenn pitched a perfect game during the Beaver’s 12-0 (7-inning) victory over Central.
  • The junior closed out the 3-game series victory with his performance.
  • He posted a career-best 11 strikeouts with 21 batters faced during the win.
  • His perfect game is only the second in DIII this season, and the first recorded for the program.
  • The Beavers improved their record to 11-6 overall and 3-0 in league play.
  • The Omaha, Nebraska native is collecting his first-career Pitcher of the Week honor.

Baseball – Position Player of the Week17348
Luke Plunkett, Luther College
Sr., C, Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville
  • Plunket helped lead Luther to a 2-1 series over No. 15 Loras College.
  • All three scheduled nine inning games ended after 7, with Luther winning game one (11-1) and game two (13-1) and Loras winning game three (17-2).
  • Plunket played all but one inning behind the dish and was credited with 16 putouts and 2 assists.
  • The senior batter .666 with 6 RBIs and scored five times in the series against No. 15 Loras.
  • Game 1: Aurora University 22, Luther 2 (7 innings) - .333 OBP, 1 walk, 6 putouts, 2 assists
  • Game 2: Loras 1, Luther 11 (7 innings) - 2-for-3 (.667), 3 R, 2 H, 5 RBI, 1 HR, 1 walk, 4 putouts, 1 assist
  • Game 3: Loras 1, Luther 13 (7 innings) - 3-for-3 (1.000), 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 walk, 5 putouts
  • Game 4: Loras 17, Luther 2 (7 innings) 1-for-3 (.333), 7 putouts, 1 assist
  • After the four-game span, Plunkett had a .545 BA, 1.182 SLG, and 0.643 OBP.
  • Plunket is a two time first-team All-Conference team member (2019, 2021).
  • The Libertyville, Ill. native is picking up his first career Position Player of the Week honor.

Softball – Pitcher of the Week17349
Taryan Barrick-Wessels, Simpson College
Jr., P, Ackley, Iowa/AGWSR
  • Simpson’s junior pitcher earned two complete game victories on the week with victories over Greenville (6-0) and Monmouth (4-1).
  • Barrick-Wessels threw a one-hit shutout against Greenville (Ill.).
  • Game 1: Simpson 6, Greenville 0 – W (7-2), GS, CG, shutout, 7.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 0.42 BAA, 25 batters faced
  • Game 2: Simpson 4, Monmouth 1 – W (8-2), GS, CG, 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 28 batters faced
  • Barrick-Wessels holds a 0.55 ERA on the season with just five earned runs in 63.1 innings pitched.
  • In addition to her pitching performance, Barrick-Wessels went 3-for-4 from the plate with a double and a triple.
  • The Storm improved to 15-6 on the season.
  • The Ackley, Iowa native is picking up her first-career Pitcher of the Week honor.

Men’s Tennis – Player of the Week17197
Lucas Huffman, Wartburg College
Sr., Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar
  • The Knights went 3-0 on the week with victories over Cornell (7-2), Simpson (9-0), and Northwestern (Iowa) (6-3).
  • At No. 1 Singles, Huffman went 3-0 defeating Cornell’s Alexander Hadler 6-3, 6-1(7), Simpson’s Caleb Vasconez 6-0, 6-0, and Northwestern’s Brian Vandenberg 6-3, 1-6, 10-3.
  • In doubles play at No. 1, Huffman partnered with Jackson Eels and defeated Cornell’s Hadler and Polidori 8-3, Simpson’s Vasconez and Aaron Price 8-2, and Northwestern’s Vandenberg and David Bomgaars 8-1.
  • Huffman improved to 15-3 at No. 1 Singles and 12-5 at No. 1 Doubles on the season.
  • The Knights have an overall record of 18-7 and 1-1 in A-R-C action.
  • Huffman is a two-time All-Conference performer.
  • The Marion, Iowa native is collecting his sixth men’s tennis Player of the Week honor (3/28/22, 3/29/21, 3/8/21, 2/22/21, 3/18/19, 2/18/19).
