CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- As a senior dual-sport student-athlete in cross country and track & field at Central College in Pella, Iowa, Leah Howard's journey as a student-athlete in the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) has been defined by resilience, leadership, and the power of community.

From overcoming a challenging freshman year to becoming an advocate for mental health, Leah's experiences have shaped her into a passionate and influential figure within her team and the A-R-C.

Becoming A Leader

Howard's freshman year was a turning point in her college career. Faced with a serious injury and subsequent health issues, she found herself unable to compete in the sport that had always been her outlet.

“I was on the sidelines, unable to do what I loved. But instead of feeling guilty or defeated, I made a vow to be the best teammate I could,” Howard said. “I started documenting our team's journey and progress, showing others that I cared about them and our team, regardless of my ability to compete. It taught me that you can be a leader without holding an official title.”

Howard's commitment to supporting her teammates, both on and off the field, became a defining characteristic of her leadership style. She believes that being a leader is not about being in charge but about showing up for others and making a positive impact. Her actions and dedication to her team have left a lasting impression on those around her.

The Power Of Support

Throughout her time at Central College, she has been grateful for the unwavering support of her coaches and professors. Their belief in her abilities and dedication to her well-being has been instrumental in her success.

“My coaches and professors care about me as a person, not just as an athlete. They see my potential and push me to believe in myself,” Howard said. “Their support has been invaluable in helping me overcome challenges and achieve my goals.”

Howard's coaches have played a significant role in her growth and development as an athlete. Their encouragement and belief in her abilities have propelled her to new heights.

“They took a chance on me and showed me that I could be part of a team and make a bigger impact than I ever thought possible,” Howard added. “Their support and guidance have been instrumental in my journey.”

A Legacy Of Love And Support

Howard's legacy extends beyond her athletic achievements. She hopes to be remembered as someone who cared deeply for her teammates and created a positive and inclusive environment.

“I want to be remembered as someone who was there for others, who loved and supported them for who they were,” Howard stated. “I want to leave a legacy of kindness and inclusivity, where everyone feels valued and supported.”

Howard's passion for mental health advocacy is also an integral part of her legacy. She believes in the importance of taking care of oneself and seeking support when needed.

“Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's self-care,” Howard said. “You can't be a great athlete or student without prioritizing your mental health. I want to spread awareness and encourage others to seek help when they need it.”

A Bright Future

As she looks toward the future, she is excited to continue her journey and make a difference in the lives of others. Her experiences as a student-athlete in the A-R-C have shaped her into a resilient and compassionate individual, ready to take on new challenges and create a positive impact.

“My journey has been filled with highs and lows, but each experience has made me stronger,” Leah said. “I want others to know that their journey is important and that they are seen and heard. I hope to inspire others to embrace their own journey and find strength in their challenges.”

Howard's story is a testament to the power of resilience, leadership, and the support of a community. Her journey as a student-athlete in the A-R-C has not only shaped her own life but has also left a lasting impact on those around her.

Through her dedication, love, and advocacy, Leah continues to inspire others to believe in themselves and create a positive and inclusive environment.
