IOWA CITY, Iowa --- The University of Dubuque will still be in the lead as the 2014 Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championships transitions to Dubuque Golf & Country Club next weekend, but the Spartans saw their nine-stroke lead reduced to seven and a new challenger emerge Saturday at Finkbine Golf Course.
Dubuque posted a 306 team score Saturday and takes a 601 total into next weekend's final 36 holes. First-day leader Eric Wolfe matched his 70 from Friday, posting three birdies on the back nine - including a chip-in from the fringe on the 18th hole. Josh Schuberg (77), Troy Krueger (79) and Mitchell Sobotta (80) rounded out Dubuque's card, while Martin Odegard carded a non-counting 83.
Central (313-295---608 overall), with two rounds under par and all five at 80 or better, bucked the scoring trend in windy conditions to fire a 295 team total and jump from fifth to second in the team standings. Desmond Stoll had five birdies en route to a 3-under 69, while teammate David Watson matched Stoll's five birdies to rebound from an 84 on Friday for a 2-under 70. Adam Squires added a 76 and Clayton Curwin and Jon Prescott posted matching 80s.
Luther (305-307---612) held its third-place standing with a 307 total Saturday behind rounds at 80 or better from Elliot Horst (73), Tobias Kohl (76), Andrew Peter (78) and Peter Kephart (80).
All five Simpson players posted rounds of 80 or better, but the Storm (304-313---617) slid back to fourth. Conner Juilfs carded a 76 while Andy Hutchins, Trent Lindenman and Nathan Molstead had 79s and Shaan Desai an 80.
Wartburg (308-312---620) also fell back a spot to fifth, while Coe (315-325---640), Loras (331-337---668) and Buena Vista (341-339---680) maintained their first-round positions.
Dubuque's Eric Wolfe (70-70---140) leads the medalist race by five strokes over Central's Desmond Stoll (76-69--145) and seven over Coe's Tyler Gunderson (74-73---147). Luther's Elliot Horst (76-73--149) sits fourth, one stroke clear of Dubuque's Josh Schuberg (73-77--150), two up on Luther's Tobias Kohl (75-76--151) and three ahead of Wartburg's Ryan Shields (72-80--152). Simpson's Andy Hutchins (74-79--153) and Trent Lindenman (74-79--153) and Wartburg's Matt Kristensen (80-73--153) round out the top 10.
The championship continues next Friday (May 2) at Dubuque Golf and Country Club. Teams will go off the first tee in three waves, led by Loras and Buena Vista at noon. Players from Simpson, Wartburg and Coe will go off in the second wave, followed by players from Dubuque, Central and Luther in the third and final wave.
The Iowa Conference champion automatically qualifies for the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships May 13-16 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
