IOWA CITY, Iowa --- Three-time defending champion Central College strengthened its case for a fourth in succession by posting the low team round of the day Friday at Finkbine Golf Course with a 301. The Dutch lead second place Coe by 20 strokes headed into Saturday’s final round.
Luther’s Tobias Kohl birdied the par-5 sixth hole and parred out on every other hole to finish with a 1-under-par 71. He holds the 54-hole medalist lead by two strokes over Loras’ Sam Herrmann. Herrmann, one of the three 36-hole co-leaders fired a 74. Garrett Cross of Coe shot 78 and sits six shots back of Kohl at 232, while the final leader entering the day – Central’s Justin Livingston – shot 80 and is tied for fifth with Dubuque’s Eric Wolfe at 234. Wolfe shot 1-over 73. Central’s Matt Vegter shot at 76 and is third, five shots back at 231.
Central’s Brent Goodenow fired the round of the day with a 3-under 69. He had five birdies in his round and posted a 33 on the back nine. The round vaulted Goodenow from a tie for 16th place to a tie for seventh with Coe’s Tyler Gunderson at 235. Buena Vista’s Mitch Brunick, Central’s Brent Messmore and Wartburg’s Lance Johnson are tied for ninth place at 238.
Saturday’s final round begins at 9 a.m. with players from Loras, Simpson and Cornell teeing off No. 1 at 10-minute intervals. Players from Buena Vista, Wartburg and Dubuque will follow at approximately 9:50 a.m. The final wave, featuring players from Central, Coe and Luther will go off at approximately 10:40 a.m.
The Iowa Conference team champion will be the league’s automatic qualifier to the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships.
