INDIANOLA, IOWA . . . Luther College's Paul Soener fired a 2-over-par 74 Friday and maintains a two-stroke lead in the medalist race after 54 holes at the 2009 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship at Indianola Country Club.

Central, which has four of the top eight individuals, posted a third round score of 290 and holds a 20-stroke lead with a 54-hole score of 904. First-round leader Luther College is second following a third round 309 giving the Norse a three-round total of 924. Wartburg Colelege (328-304-302—934) is third followed by Loras College (315-312-314—941) and Buena Vista University (318-325-301—344).

Loras' Mark Dolphin shot a 73 to move into a tie for second place with a 54-hole total of 6-over-par 222. Joining Dolphin at 222 is two-time defending meet medalist Andy Petersen, who matched Soener's 74 to remain two shots back entering the Championship's final day. Central's Andrew Townsend and Wartburg's Ian Flores tied for low round honors Friday with 1-under-par 71s. Townsend (84-73-71—228) sits in a three-way tie for fifth, while Flores (82-78-81—231) jumped into the top-10 and sits ninth.

The 72-hole championship concludes Saturday at Indianola Country Club. The Iowa Conference team champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 13-16, 2009, at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
