IOWA CITY, IOWA . . . Central College, behind four golfers in the top-10, holds a five-stroke lead over host Wartburg College at the midway point of the 2010 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Men's Golf Championship.

Four of five Dutch golfers fired rounds in the 70s for a 302 team total in overcast conditions Saturday on the par-72, 7,027-yard layout at Finkbine Golf Course. Central will take a 36-hole total of 610 into play next Friday and Saturday at Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly.

Wartburg posted the low team round of the day with a 298 as all five golfers breaking 80. The Knights cut 19 shots off Friday’s score and will take a 615 score into next weekend’s play on their home course. Luther is third (314-303—617), followed by round one co-leader Buena Vista (308-312—620) and Loras (321-301—622). Sixth-place Simpson (330-305—630) made the biggest move on the course Saturday, cutting 25 strokes off its first round score.

Buena Vista’s Andy Soper sits at 3-over-par 147 after firing a 73 Saturday and will take a 1-stroke lead over Simpson’s James Montgomery into the final weekend of the Championship. Montgomery, playing in the day’s final threesome, carded a 4-under-par round of 68 featuring seven birdies and only three bogeys. The round is the lowest at the Championships since Nick Grossman carded a 68 in the first round of the 2005 meet at Gates Park in Waterloo. Round one leader Justin Smool of Central is tied for fourth at 151 after carding an 80. Tied with Smool is Loras’ Mark Dolphin, who followed up Friday’s first-round 80 with a 1-under-par 71.

The IIAC Championship continues Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1 at Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly. Tee times begin at 11:00 a.m. with players from Cornell, Dubuque, and Coe hitting the links. Players from Buena Vista, Loras, and Simpson will be paired in the second wave, while players from Central, Wartburg, and Luther will make up the final wave.
