STORM LAKE, IOWA . . . Central College, behind four golfers in the top-10 and three in the top-four, holds a 22-stroke lead over Loras College at the midway point of the 2011 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Men's Golf Championship.
Central posted the low team round of the day with a 289 as all five golfers posted 75s or better on the par-72, 6,708-yard layout at Lake Creek Country Club. The Dutch cut 24 shots off Saturday’s leading score and will take a 36-hole total of 602 into play Friday-Saturday, April 29-30 at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
Loras is second (319-305—624), leapfrogging Buena Vista (316-309—625). Luther (324-303—627) sits fourth followed by Simpson (328-305—633), Dubuque (320-317—637), and Coe (329-316—645). Eighth-place Wartburg (340-308—648) made the biggest move on the course Sunday, cutting 32 strokes off its first round score.
Loras’ Sam Herrmann sits at 2-over-par 146 after firing a second 73 Sunday and will take a 3-stroke lead over Central’s Jason Harvey and Justin Livingston into the final weekend of the Championship. Harvey fired the low round of the Championship to this point with a 1-under-par 71 Sunday. He birdied six holes, including four on the back nine, and was in position to post a round in the 60s before posting a double bogey at the last.
Central’s Brent Messmore and Simpson’s Matt Spaulding are tied for fourth at 151. Messmore fired an even-par 72, rebounding from a triple bogey on the first hole with five birdies en route to a 31 on the back nine.
The IIAC Championship continues Friday-Saturday, April 29-30 at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. Tee times begin at 9:00 a.m. with players from Cornell, Wartburg, and Coe hitting the links. Players from Dubuque, Simpson, and Luther will be paired in the second wave, while players from Central, Loras, and Buena Vista will make up the final wave. Saturday’s tee times will be set using the 54-hole team scores.
