Central Leads at Midway Point of IIAC Men's Golf Championships

Luther's Soener Leads Medalist Race by Two Strokes

IOWA CITY, IOWA . . . Central College, behind four golfers in the top-10, holds a one-stroke lead over Luther College at the midway point of the 2009 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Men's Golf Championship.

All five Dutch golfers fired rounds in the 70s for a 301 team total in chilly conditions Saturday on the par-72, 7,044-yard layout at Finkbine Golf Course. Central will take a 36-hole total of 614 into play next Friday and Saturday at Indianola Country Club.

Luther cut three strokes off Friday's score by posting a 306 but trails by a stroke at 615. Loras is third (315-312--627), followed by Wartburg (328-304--632) and Buena Vista (318-325--643).

After firing back-to-back 73s, Luther's Paul Soener sits at 2-over-par 146 and will take a 2-stroke lead over Central's Andy Petersen and Wartburg's Chris Reck into the final weekend of the Championship. Petersen, the two-time defending meet medalist and IIAC Player of the Year, fired a 79 Saturday after posting Friday's low round of 69. Reck followed up Friday's 78 by posting a 2-under-par 70 Saturday - the low round of the day. Loras' Mark Dolphin is fourth at 5-over-par 149 after rounds of 75 and 74 on the opening weekend.

The IIAC Championship continues Friday-Saturday, May 1-2 at Indianola Country Club in Indianola. Tee times begin at 11:00 a.m. with players from Cornell, Dubuque, and Simpson hitting the links. Players from Buena Vista, Coe, and Wartburg will be paired in the second wave, while players from Central, Loras, and Luther will make up the final wave. Saturday’s tee times will be set using the 54-hole individual leaderboard.
