CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- For Bradley Curren, basketball at Central College is more than a game—it’s a proving ground for character. As a junior in the American Rivers Conference, Curren has embraced the demands of being a student-athlete, channeling the league’s competitive energy into personal growth.

“I am proud to be a student-athlete in the American Rivers Conference,” Curren said. “Competing in such a competitive and respected league has pushed me to grow both academically and athletically.”

Through the grind of practices, late-night study sessions, and high-stakes games, Curren has discovered the values that define him: discipline, resilience, and a relentless work ethic. Those lessons, he said, will carry him far beyond the hardwood.

Finding Strength in Adversity
Last season tested Curren and his team in ways they hadn’t anticipated. Coming off a four-game losing streak, they faced a pivotal final regular-season matchup. Instead of splintering, they pulled together.

“Despite the adversity, we stayed together as a team, continued to put in the work, and ultimately won that last game,” he said. “That victory gave us momentum heading into the conference tournament, where we went on to win the championship.”

The experience taught him to stay steady—no matter the circumstances. “I learned the importance of staying level-headed through both highs and lows, maintaining a strong work ethic, and trusting that consistent effort will produce results,” Curren said.

Support That Fuels Success
Balancing academics and athletics isn’t easy, but Curren credits his coaches and professors for making it possible. Their understanding and flexibility have been crucial during the busiest stretches of the season.

“During the season, professors are always helpful in making sure we are aware of upcoming assignments and due dates,” he said. “They are very understanding of the time it takes to be a student-athlete and do their best to support us throughout the season.”

That network of support extends beyond campus. Central College and the Pella community have rallied behind the men’s basketball program, filling Kuyper Gymnasium and creating an atmosphere that elevates every game.

“Kuyper Gymnasium is always packed for conference matchups, creating an exciting atmosphere that makes competing even more special,” Curren said. “That support has given me an even greater sense of pride in both Central College and the men’s basketball program.”

A Championship Moment
When Curren looks back on his time in the A-R-C, one memory stands above the rest: the conference tournament run that punched Central’s ticket to the national tournament.

“My favorite accomplishment was winning the conference tournament to qualify for the national tournament,” he said. “It was a fun tournament run, knocking off two top teams on their home courts. Our season was full of ups and downs, so it was good to end the year on a high note.”

Building a Legacy
Legacy matters to Curren. He’s focused on leaving the program stronger than he found it—and on being remembered for the qualities that have defined his journey.

“My goal is to leave the Central men's basketball program better than I found it, while personally being remembered for my hard work and dedication to the greater good of the team,” he said.

The relationships he’s built along the way are a testament to that commitment. “Playing basketball in college has been an incredible experience,” Curren said. “I’ve built friendships and relationships that I know will last a lifetime. Choosing Central was one of the best decisions I’ve made, and I truly can’t imagine myself anywhere else.”
