INDIANOLA, Iowa -- It is with profound sadness that the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announces the passing of Simpson College President Jay Byers. Byers was named the 25th President in July of 2023, at his alma mater.
"President Byers was a steadfast supporter of athletics and a valued leader within our conference community," wrote Marie Stroman, A-R-C Commissioner. "His commitment to the student-athlete experience and to fostering excellence at Simpson College was evident to all who had the privilege of working with him."
Prior to his presidential appointment, Byers served on Simpson’s Board of Trustees for 11 years. He also distinguished himself during 18 years of executive leadership with the Greater Des Moines Partnership, including 11 years as president and CEO. Byers professional career began as an attorney in Indianapolis.
Byers proudly served on the A-R-C Presidents Council Executive Committee this academic year as he led with passion, dedication, and vision.
The American Rivers Conference stands united with Simpson College during this difficult time.
Additional information will be posted as available. Please continue to keep the Simpson community, Byers' family, and all who knew him in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Simpson College Statement:
The following message is from Simpson College Board of Trustees Chair Terry Handley
To our campus community:
We have sad news to share with you: This morning, Simpson College President Jay Byers had missed some meetings, which was very unusual. Shortly before noon, a wellness check was performed at the president’s residence, Sigler House, where he was found deceased.
This is stunning and devastating news.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to share our heartfelt condolences to the many people who knew and loved President Byers, including his family, friends and Simpson family. President Byers was also an alumnus, graduating in 1993.
All classes at Simpson will be cancelled tomorrow and grief counselors will be available for our students and staff.
We are working closely with local officials as they investigate the matter.
We are stunned and we will be grieving. Next week we will come together to share additional details about how we move forward.
Until then, please join me in keeping President Byers’s family and close friends in our thoughts as they navigate this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Terry Handley
Board Chair
Simpson College Board of Trustees
