MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The (RV) Coe College Kohawks (21-12 overall, 6-2 A-R-C) drops out of the 2023 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament after a 3-1 loss to the No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (27-4 overall, 6-1 WIAC). The Kohawks have made it to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in program history, all under current head coach
DeAnn Akins.
After dropping the first set 25-15, the Kohawks bounced back in the second set (25-20) to tie the game at one set apiece. The UW-Whitewater Warhawks found their momentum in the third set, as they defeated Coe 25-12 to take a 2-1 lead. The Kohawks never gave up as the fourth set was a back-and-forth battle, similar to the second set of the game. This time, the Warhawks came out on top with a 25-20 win to clinch a spot in the regional semifinals.
Leading the Kohawk offense was
Maggie Furlong with 11 kills, followed by
Grace Lueken with eight kills, and
Madi Parson with seven. Dishing out the assists was sophomore
Maddy Maahs with 32 assists. Along with dishing out the assists, Maahs was the leader on the defense, recording 18 digs, followed closely behind by Parson with 15, Furlong with 13, and Lueken with 12.
Gracie Urbatsch led the Kohawks as she recorded three blocks, followed by Lueken with 2.5 blocks.
Maddie Harris led the team at the service line, picking up three service aces.
