CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Molly Ramirez has been on a remarkable journey as a women’s volleyball student-athlete at Nebraska Wesleyan University, one that has taught her countless lessons about perseverance, leadership, and the power of community.

Ramirez’s story is a testament to the resilience and determination required to succeed in both academics and athletics, and it’s a journey that has been made all the more meaningful by being a part of the American Rivers Conference.

“Being a student-athlete in the American Rivers Conference has taught me the value of discipline, grit, buying in, and leadership,” Ramirez said. “Balancing academics and athletics teaches me that success comes from consistent effort, commitment, and the ability to show up fully in both the classroom and on the field.”

Facing tough competition has taught Ramirez to embrace challenges and bounce back from tough losses.

“Most importantly, representing Nebraska Wesleyan in the A-R-C gives me a sense of gratitude, integrity, and responsibility to be a positive example both on and off the court,” Ramirez said.

A Journey of Growth
Ramirez’s journey began in high school, where she faced the challenge of not getting much playing time on the court, which tested her confidence and commitment to the sport she loves.

Instead of giving up, she chose to trust the process, continuing to train, work hard, and believe that her opportunity would come. Ramirez carried that perseverance into her college experience, where she earned her playing time from the beginning and became a vital contributor to her team’s success.

“That challenge taught me that true growth happens when you stay committed through the waiting, work when others aren’t, and make yourself 1% better every day,” Ramirez said. “It’s shaped me into a more determined, empathetic leader who encourages others to keep going even when the results aren’t immediate.”

A Supportive Community
One of the most motivating aspects of Ramirez’s college experience has been the support she receives from coaches, teammates, peers, and faculty.

“The support creates a positive environment where I feel encouraged to grow both athletically and personally,” Ramirez said. “Knowing I’m included and valued pushes me to do my best, lead with honesty and kindness, and support others along the way.”

Ramirez is thankful for the incredible support she receives from both her professors and coaches.

“Many of my professors, like Gina Chambers, regularly come to our games, showing genuine interest in our lives beyond the classroom,” Ramirez said. “Even President Good is often in the stands, cheering us on and taking selfies with students in the crowd.”

On the athletic side, Ramirez’s coaches are deeply invested in their academic success as well.

“They check in with us regularly about our classes and require grade checks every semester to keep us accountable,” Ramirez said. “Knowing that both my professors and coaches are equally committed to my growth on and off the court has been one of the most motivating parts of my college experience.”

Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Looking ahead, Ramirez hopes to leave a legacy of perseverance and leadership. She wants to be remembered as someone who stayed committed through challenges, supported her teammates, and contributed to a positive culture both on and off the court.

“Ultimately, I hope my journey inspires future student-athletes in the A-R-C to trust the process and lead with authenticity,” Ramirez said.

Her journey is a reminder that success isn’t always immediate, but with patience and hard work, opportunities will come. It’s about more than just competition; it’s a journey of growth, resilience, and self-discovery.

“I am constantly taught how to balance demanding schedules, overcome setbacks, and lean on my community for support. Through prayer and trust in God’s timing, I have been shown that progress often comes in small steps, and having grace and patience opens doors to opportunities you might not expect,” Ramirez said. “Staying humble and making myself a better teammate and athlete for my team is something I take pride in. I hope my story encourages others to face challenges with confidence and use every experience to grow both on and off the court.”
