The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced today that Luther College fifth-year forward Marcos Vila (Madrid, Spain/I.E.S San Fernando) has been selected as the league’s Offensive MVP and Loras College senior midfielder Michael Brandt (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Centennial) was named Defensive MVP. Loras College head coach Steven McCarthy and assistants Jordan Kayser, Seth Kurzynski, and Juan Jose Arias Mondragon were voted American Rivers Coaching Staff of the Year. In addition to the major awards, the conference announced the 22-member All-Conference team.
 
Earning his second Offensive MVP honor, Vila also earns a spot on the 22-member All-Conference squad, the fourth of his career (2019, 2020, 2021). The Spain native is the fourth individual in the conference to earn a major award twice in his career. He joins Simpson’s Garrett Pochop (2016, 2017), Loras’ Kevin Cavers (2012, 2013), and Wartburg’s Harrison Kibombo-Lugujjo (2004, 2006). In eight conference matches, Vila led the league in points (20) and goals (8). Additionally, he finished tied for first with two game winning goals. The fifth-year senior forward was tied for third with four assists during conference play. Vila was one-for-one on penalty kicks. In addition, Vila scored the lone goal in the conference tournament championship to claim the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
 
Brandt becomes the third player to receive Defensive MVP honors for the Duhawks, joining Jorge Simon (2015) and Mike Pizzello (2014). Additionally, since 2013 Loras has seen two players earn Offensive MVP honors. Prior to the MVP award being split to recognize an offensive and defensive standout in 2013, Loras had six players named conference MVP. Playing 533 minutes throughout eight conference matches, the Ankeny native led the Duhawk defense to five shutouts and only allowed nine goals on the season. In addition, Brandt recorded two assists. The senior midfielder received All-Conference honors for the third time in his career.
 
In his third year at the helm of the Loras men’s soccer program, head coach McCarthy and assistants guided the Duhawks to their 14th league title in program history, with the first coming in 2003. At the conclusion of this year’s conference play, Loras finished with a 5-1-2 league record. Defensively, the Duhawks compiled a goals against average of 1.13, giving up just seven goals in eight matches. On the offensive end, Loras netted 18 goals, good for fourth in the league. This is the eighth time Loras is earning Coaching Staff of the Year honors and first honor for McCarthy.
 
On top of Vila’s MVP honor, the Luther Norse had four All-Conference performers this season. Led by senior midfielder Will Overberg (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Centennial) who earned his way to the All-Conference team for the fourth time in his career. Fifth-year senior Faydane Ouro-Akondo (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) is picking up his third All-Conference accolade. Collecting honors for the first time are sophomores Raul Ferrandez (Crevillent, Spain) and Javier Pastor Valls (Mutxamel, Spain/I.E.S San Fernando).
 
Overberg ranked second in the league and on the team in points (14) and assists (6). The senior midfielder scored four goals on the season including one game winner. Ouro-Akondo picked up five points in the team’s eight conference contests coming by way of two goals and one assist. Pastor Valls was another key element in Luther leading the conference with 28 goals this season. The sophomore forward recorded four points, coming from one goal and two assists. Defensively, Ferrandez led the Norse’s backline, holding opponents to just seven goals scored all season. The sophomore defender found his way to the All-Conference team after earning honorable mention accolades a season ago. Luther secured four shutouts in eight conference contests this season.
 
The Loras Duhawks had four All-Conference honorees this season in addition to Brandt earning Defensive MVP. Joining Brandt on the All-Conference team are seniors Jared Block (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) and Kevin Kucaba (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North), Sophomore Michael Koutsopanagos (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), and freshman Taylor Sowell (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic). Kucaba is now a three-time honoree and Block a two-time honoree. Koutsopanagos and Sowell are earning their first All-Conference honors.
 
Sophomore midfielder, Koutsopanagos, led the team in points, coming by way of three goals and one assist. The Rockford, Illinois native also recorded a game-winning goal. Kucaba is now a three-time All-Conference honoree after picking up six points for the Duahwks this season. The senior midfielder scored three goals including a game-winner during league play this season. Sowell is the only freshman to make the All-Conference team this year. The Boylan Catholic prep scored a goal and added two assists in conference play this season. Rounding out the All-Conference honorees for the Duhawks, Block played a vital role on the Duhawks defense in allowing just nine goals all season and recording five shutouts. In addition, the Dubuque native also scored a goal and recorded an assist.
 
Wartburg had four honorees this season, led by senior midfielder Caleb Halleran (Fairfax, Iowa/Prairie) who is earning his second All-Conference honor of his career. Joining Halleran is fifth-year senior Anzuruni Kimba (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) and seniors Edvin Rizvic (Waterloo, Iowa/Waterloo West) and Brennon Woody (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes). Kimba, Rizvic, and Woody are all picking up their first All-Conference honor in their careers. Woody was a 2020 (Spring 2021) honorable mention performer.
 
Halleran was a key member of the defense for the Knights, tallying six shutouts, and holding opponents to just three goals scored in eight games to lead the conference. Kimba picked up six points this season as a forward for Wartburg. The Rock Island native scored two goals, including a game-winner, and had two assists. Senior forward, Rizvic, picked up five points for the Knights, coming by way of two goals and one assist. Rizvic also had a game-winner during league play. Woody was the starting goalkeeper for the Knights this season and finished the conference season with a 3-0-3 record. The Grimes native recorded 20 saves on 69 shots faced and recorded four shutouts to help the Knights finish league play with a 3-0-5 record.
 
The Simpson College Storm picked up three All-A-R-C performers this season after a third-place finish with a 4-1-3 record this fall. The Storm were led by four-time All-Conference performer, Baraka Ellie (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt). Collecting honors for the first time are senior defender Ricardo Ibarra (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown) and junior forward Ronaldo Ordaz-Zambrano (Marshalltown, Iowa/Marshalltown). Finishing tied for third in the league in points and second in goals, Ellie led the Storm. The Des Moines native scored four goals and added two assists to bring his point total to 10 on the season. Ordaz-Zambrano also scored four goals this season to tie for second in the league. Two of those were game-winning goals for Simpson. On the defensive side for the Storm, Ibarra is earning his first All-Conference honor after being an honorable mention performer in 2020 (Spring 2021). Ibarra helped the Storm defense to three shutouts this season and only allowed nine goals during league play. In addition, the senior defender scored one goal.
 
Two Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves are earning All-Conference honors this season, led by Logan Lawrence (Papillion, Neb./Papillion-LaVista South) who is now a two-time honoree. Lawrence tied for third in the league with 10 points during conference play, coming by way of three goals and four assists to help the Prairie Wolves finish with a 4-2-2 conference record. Joining Lawrence on this year’s All-Conference team is sophomore goalkeeper, Zachary Weis (Omaha, Neb./Omaha Skutt Catholic). Weis is earning his first All-Conference honor after being named honorable mention a season ago. The Omaha native posted a 4-2-2 record in league play this year, while recording three shutouts. Weis faced 122 shots and accounted for 38 saves in eight league games.
 
University of Dubuque had two honorees this season. Senior midfielder Lucas Von Braun (Stockholm, Sweden/Nacka Gymnasium) is earning his third All-Conference honor and sophomore forward Gavin Wooldridge (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) is earning his first honor. Von Braun was a key defender for the Spartans team that had five shutouts and only allowed six goals in eight contests. In addition, Von Braun scored one goal for UD. Wooldridge led the Spartans offense with five points coming by way of two goals and one assist. The Spartans finished league play with a 3-2-3 record.
 
Rounding out the All-Conference team is sophomore midfielder from Central College, Joe Brown (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk). Brown is earning his first All-Conference recognition by compiling eight points this season. The Norwalk native scored three goals and added two assists for the Dutch.
