CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced today that Luther College junior forward
Marcos Vila (Madrid, Spain/I.E.S. San Fernando) has been selected as the league's Offensive MVP and University of Dubuque senior goalkeeper
Brandon White (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community) was named Defensive MVP. University of Dubuque head coach
Brad Johnson, assistants
Thomas Corcoran and
Colby Gay were voted American Rivers Coaching Staff of the Year. In addition to the major awards, the conference announced the 22-member All-Conference team.
As Offensive MVP, Vila also earns a spot on the 22-member All-Conference squad, the second of his career (2019). The Madrid, Spain native is the second Offensive MVP award winner from Luther, joining Aidan O'Driscoll (2018). Prior to the MVP award being split to recognize an offensive and defensive standout in 2013, Luther had seven players named conference MVP. Additionally, since 2013 the Norse have seen three players earn Defensive MVP honors. In eight conference matches Vila led the league in points (16), goals (7). Additionally, he finished tied for first with two game winning goals. The junior forward ranked second in shots on goal (16) and tied for 12th with two assists.
White becomes the first player to receive Defensive MVP honors for the Spartans. Former Dubuque standout,
Gonzolo Hernandez earned Offensive MVP accolades in 2015. This year’s All-Conference selection marks the second consecutive honor for White. He also picked up honorable mention recognition in 2018. Playing 750 minutes in goal throughout eight conference matches, the Minooka, Ill. native owned the top A-R-C goals against average at .720. He also owned a league-best four shutouts and tied for first in goals allowed (6). His .727 save percentage finished third-best in the conference.
In his 12
th year at the helm of the Dubuque men’s soccer program, head coach Brad Johnson, assistants Corcoran and Gay guided the Spartans to their second league title in program history, with the first coming in 2010. At the conclusion of this year’s conference play, Dubuque finished with a 6-1-1 A-R-C record. Defensively, UD owned the top goals against average (.720), giving up just six goals in eight matches. On the offensive end Dubuque netted 21 goals, good for second in the league. This is the first time Dubuque is earning Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
The Spartans led the league with seven All-Conference honorees this season. Joining White on the All-Conference team are juniors
Glorie Luwara (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) and
Axel Aaman (Taeby, Sweden/Danderyds Gymnasium Studievagl). Luwara is now a two-time honoree after being named to the team a season ago. Three underclassmen also join the All-Conference team for the Spartans, including three international student-athletes forward
Mathias Ericsson (So., Stockholm, Sweden/Tibble Gymnasium), forward
Joel Johansson (So., Malmo, Sweden/Polhemskolan), and mid-fielder
Lucas Von Braun (So., Stockholm, Sweden/Nacka Gymnasium). Freshman defender
Darren Gray (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Mundelein) rounds out the Spartan All-Conference honorees.
The three forwards - Ericsson, Johansson, and Luwara - led the Spartan attack this spring, for an offense that scored the league's second most goals at 21. A balanced scoring threat for the Spartans as Von Braun, Ericsson, and Luwara all netted three goals. Johansson tallied assists to five of the Spartan's 21 team goals, to lead the team. Gray helped propel the Dubuque defense that owned the top goals against average at .720/g, allowing just six goals in eight conference matches, along with Von Braun and Aaman from their midfield positions.
On top of Vila's MVP honor, the Luther Norse had six All-Conference performers this spring. Led by seniors
Carson Davenport (GK, Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and
Steven Johnson (D, Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy). Also collecting honors for the first time are Junior forward
Faydane Ouro-Akondo (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) and sophomore midfielder
Tim Hellermann (Münster, Germany/Pascal Gymnasium) The final Norse All-Conference performer is second year midfielder
Will Overberg (Ankeny, Iowa/Centennial), a 2019 All-Conference performer.
Ouro-Akondo and Overberg led Luther in assists this season with five and four, respectively, pacing a team that found the back of the net 20 times this season. The 20 goals sat tied for third in the league. Johnson helped maintain a strong Norse defensive line that only allowed nine goals on the season, one of three conference teams to allow single digit goals against. Davenport was solid in the net, maintaining the third best goals against average (1.089) in the A-R-C, while recording two shutouts for a Norse squad that finished the year with a 5-2-1 record.
The Loras College Duhawks picked up four All-A-R-C performers this season after a second place finish with a 5-0-3 record this spring. 2019 Offensive MVP
Tigrio Huerta (Sr., Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) is picking up his second straight All-Conference honor this season after leading the Duhawks in shots with 22, connecting on three of those shots, which sits tied for sixth in the conference. Joining Huerta on the All-Conference team is junior midfielder
Kevin Kucaba (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Kucaba sat 10th in the conference with 15 shots and assisted on four Duhawk goals. Two Duhawk sophomore defenders,
Michael Brandt (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Centennial) and
Patrick Clancy (Chicago, Ill./Marist), are collecting their first-career All-Conference recognition. The two defenders guided a Loras defense that only allowed 11 goals on the year, sitting fourth in the A-R-C.
Baraka Ellie (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) and
Jordy Trianna-Vasquez (So., Clive, Iowa/West Des Moines Valley) pick up All-Conference recognition for the Simpson Storm. Trianna-Vasquez, a midfielder for the Storm, led the team with 18 shots this season, finding the back of the net five times which also led the squad and tied for second in the A-R-C. Of Simpson's 20 goals on the season, Ellie assisted on four of them. Both Trianna-Vasquez and Ellie, from their midfield positions, helped guide the Storm to a 3-2-2 record and a fifth place finish in the A-R-C.
Rounding out the All-Conference team are three Wartburg Knights, all of which are earning their first-career All-Conference recognitions. Senior forward
Jack Palen (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk Community) paced the Knights offensive attack, netting five goals on the season, which tied for second in the league. Sophomores
Payton Chapman (D, Clive, Iowa/West Des Moines Valley) and
Caleb Halleran (MF/F, Fairfax, Iowa/Prairie) join Palen on this year's All-Conference squad. Chapman and Halleran helped guide the Wartburg defense that only allowed six goals in their seven conference matches this season, putting their goals against average at .857/g, ranking second in the A-R-C. The Knights finished third this season with a 5-2 record.
