CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced today that University of Dubuque senior forward Gloire Luwara (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) has been selected as the league’s Offensive MVP and University of Dubuque sophomore defender Darren Gray (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Mundelein) was named Defensive MVP. University of Dubuque head coach Brad Johnson, assistants Thomas Corcoran and Colby Gay were voted American Rivers Coaching Staff of the Year. In addition to the major awards, the conference announced the 22-member All-Conference team.
 
As offensive MVP, Luwara also earns a spot on the 22-member All-Conference squad, the third of his career (2019, 2020). The Rock Island, Ill. native is the second Offensive MVP award winner from Dubuque, joining Gonzalo Hernandez (2015). In eight conference matches, Luwara finished tied for first in league points (20) and goals (9). Additionally, he finished league play, leading the league with three game-winning goals. The senior forward ranked second in shots on goal with 17.
 
Gray becomes the second player to receive Defensive MVP honors for the Spartans, joining Brandon White (2020). This year’s All-Conference selection marks the second consecutive honor for Gray. Playing 487 minutes throughout eight conference matches, the Hawthorn Woods, Ill. native led the Spartans to the top A-R-C team goals-against average (.625). The sophomore defender finished tied for fourth in the league with four assists.
 
In his 13th year at the Helm of the Dubuque men’s soccer program, head coach Brad Johnson, assistants Corcoran and Gay guided the Spartans to their third league title in program history, with the first coming in 2010. At the conclusion of this year’s conference play, Dubuque finished with an 8-0 A-R-C record. Defensively, UD owned the top goals-against average (.625), giving up just five goals in eight matches. On the offensive end, Dubuque netted 25 goals, good for second in the league. This is the second time Dubuque is earning Coaching Staff of the Year honors, the first coming in the 2020 (Spring 2021) season.
 
The Spartans had five All-Conference honorees this season. Joining Luwara and Gray on the All-Conference team are juniors Joel Skog-Johansson (Malmo, Sweden/Polhemskolan) and Lucas Von Braun (Stockholm, Sweden/Nacka Gymnasium). Skog-Johansson and Von Braun are now two-time honorees after being named to the team a season ago. Senior Axel Aaman (Taeby, Sweden/Danderyds Gymnasium Studievagl) rounds out the Spartan All-Conference honorees.
 
Junior forward, Skog-Johansson, was second on the team and tied for sixth in the league, scoring four goals. The Malmo, Sweden native tied for sixth in the league in total points with 10, coming from four goals and two assists. In the eight conference matches, junior midfielder Von Braun and senior midfielder Aaman, were key contributors in holding league opponents to five goals.
 
The Loras College Duhawks picked up five All-A-R-C performers this season after earning the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Duhawks were led by two-time All-Conference performers, junior defender Michael Brandt (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Centennial) and senior midfielder Kevin Kucaba (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Collecting honors for the first time are junior Jared Block (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) and seniors Juan Jose Arias Mondragon (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) and Connor Fitzpatrick (Eugene, Ore./Marist).
 
Brandt and Block helped maintain a strong Duhawks defensive line that only allowed 10 goals in conference play. Arias Mondragon led the Duhawks offense with 13 points coming off six goals and one assist. He also finished league play with 15 shots on goal. Kucaba had two goals and three assists in league play. Fitzpatrick was solid in the net, maintaining the fourth best goals against average (1.058) in the A-R-C, while recording two shutouts for a Duhawks squad that finished the year with a 5-2-1 record.
 
The Luther College Norse also picked up five All-A-R-C performers this season after a fourth-place finish with a 4-1-3 record this fall. 2020 Offensive MVP Marcos Vila (Madrid, Spain/I.E.S. San Fernando) is picking up his third straight All-Conference honor this season after leading the Norse in shots with 23, connecting on six of those shots, which sits tied for fourth in the conference. Joining Vila on the All-Conference team is senior forward Faydane Ouro-Akondo (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest). Ouro-Akondo sat tied for sixth in total points coming off two goals and six assists, putting him at the top of the conference. Now earning his third All-Conference honor, Will Overberg (Ankeny, Iowa/Centennial) led the Norse in goals with eight during conference play. The junior midfielder finished with 18 points, putting him third in the league. First year defender, Hernan Manzanet (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/High Mowing School), is collecting his first-career All-Conference recognition. He helped the Norse defense in the league’s second-best goals-against average (.808). Senior goalkeeper, Carson Davenport (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) was stellar in the net for the Norse. He had a conference leading goals-against average (.841) and save percentage (.848). Davenport is collecting his second-consecutive All-Conference honors.
 
Simpson had four All-Conference honorees this season. Junior midfielder Jordy Trianna-Vasquez (Clive, Iowa/West Des Moines Valley) is the only player from the Storm earning his second All-Conference honor. Trianna-Vasquez led the Storm with nine points coming off four goals and one assist in addition to 16 shots on goal. Enrique Idehen (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale) is earning his first All-Conference honors after being named honorable mention in 2019 and 2020. Idehen finished conference play with seven total points coming off three goals and one assist. Earning their first-career All-Conference recognitions are senior defender Ian Dean (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and junior midfielder Alan Imamovic (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale). They helped guide the Storm to a 5-2-1 finish in conference and a second-place finish in the A-R-C.
 
Two Wartburg College Knights are picking up All-Conference recognition for the second-consecutive year. Senior forward Jack Palen (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk Community) and junior defender Payton Chapman (Clive, Iowa/Valley). Palen was atop the league with 20 total points coming off nine goals and two assists. He also led the league with 24 shots on goal. Chapman was key for the Knights backline and helping the Knights to a 4-3-1 A-R-C record.
 
Rounding out the All-Conference team is a senior midfielder from Nebraska Wesleyan University, Logan Lawrence (Papillion, Neb./Papillion Lavista South). Lawrence is earning his first All-Conference recognition after receiving honorable mention honors in 2020. He started all eight conference matches for the Prairie Wolves and helped lead them to their first A-R-C tournament since 2018.
