CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The American Rivers Conference announced today that Simpson College junior Anna Wanek (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) has been selected Women’s Tennis Player of the Year for the 2020 season. The Simpson College coaching staff, directed by head coach Faith Bliss and assisted by Kathryn Hays, earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors. In addition to the major awards the league announced the 22-member All-Conference team. 

Bliss, in this her third season at the helm of the women's team, guided the Storm to a 5-3 conference mark, the program’s most wins since 2008, when they finished 5-4. Posting their first winning record in conference play since 2008, the Strom clinched the No. 3 seed for the A-R-C NCAA Automatic Qualifier (AQ) Tournament April 27, 30 and May 1, 2021 in Decorah, Iowa. This is the program’s fourth Coaching Staff of the Year honor and first since 1997.
 
Wanek, in her first year competing for the Storm, earned both singles and doubles All-Conference honors, in addition to her MVP accolade. Wanek is the second Simpson women’s tennis player to win MVP recognition, joining Kathy Nedved, who earned co-MVP honors in 1996. The Urbandale, Iowa native won the 2020 Women’s Tennis A-Flight Singles championship back on October 17. The junior finished the conference season with an undefeated 8-0 singles record at No. 1 and 14-0 overall. At. No. 1 doubles, Wanek and partner Emily King (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) finished 5-3 in conference action and 8-3 overall. Additionally, Wanek was named a three-time A-R-C Player of the Week in 2020 (9/28/20, 10/5/20, 10/19/20).

King joined Wanek as an All-Conference singles and doubles honoree in 2020. At the No.2 position, King recorded a singles record of 6-2 in conference. The junior is collecting her second career All-Conference singles honor and her first doubles accolade.  

Central’s Karleigh Schilling (Swisher, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) becomes a four-time All-Conference singles and doubles honoree. Schilling finished conference play with a 6-2 record at No. 1 singles and 6-2 at No. 1 doubles for the Dutch. Alyssa Lewton (Ankeny, Iowa/Centennial) joins Schilling on the All-Conference doubles team. The duo took home gold in the A-Doubles draw at 2020 A-R-C Women’s Tennis Individual Tournament.

Coe’s Eliza Sundermann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) capped off her senior season with selection to the All-Conference singles team for the third consecutive year, in addition to earning all-conference doubles honors for the second consecutive year. In conference play, she finished 6-2 at No. 2 singles, 5-3 at No. 1 doubles. Kohawk second-year, Emma Lassen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) also earned all-conference singles recognition. Lassen concluded conference play with a mark of 3-5 at No. 1 singles.

Loras College's Audrey Hinz (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) added her fourth all-conference singles accolade to her list of accomplishments. In conference play, the senior Duhawk went 2-5 at No.1 singles.

Luther College, the 2020 American Rivers Conference regular season champions, finished with a perfect 8-0 record. The Norse had three players earn both doubles and singles All-Conference honors and a fourth pick up doubles accolades.

The Norse were led by last year’s Most Valuable Player, Devon Bourget (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial), who registered her third career singles All-Conference honor, along with her fourth consecutive All-Conference doubles accolade. The senior compiled conference records of 2-1 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 2 singles. Bourget claimed the silver medal in the A-Singles flight at the 2020 A-R-C Individual Tournament. In doubles competition, Bourget partnered with fellow doubles All-Conference performer Shelby Cook (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) to compile a perfect 6-0 record at No. 1. Cook also earned All-Conference singles honors after a perfect 6-0 conference showing, half at No. 1 and half at No. 2. Cook finished third at this year’s Individual Tournament. The junior is earning her third straight All-Conference doubles honor and second straight All-Conference singles recognition.

First-year Sofia Sackett (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) is the third Norse to be recognized as an All-Conference performer in both singles and doubles this season. The Des Moines, Iowa native put together an impressive undefeated campaign, going 5-0 at No. 3 singles and winning her sole match at No. 1 singles. Most of the season Sackett partnered with fellow All-Conference doubles honoree Lexi Hastings (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie), posting a 3-1 mark in conference play at No. 2 singles. Sackett recorded an overall doubles record of 6-3. Hastings, completing her sophomore campaign, is earning back-to-back All-Conference doubles honors. Hastings compiled a 5-2 overall mark in doubles. The duo of Sackett and Hastings also earned bronze in the A-Doubles draw at the 2020 A-R-C Women’s Individual tournament.

Second-year Brooke Sailer (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) of Nebraska Wesleyan went 3-4 at No.1 singles against league competition and finished with an overall record of 5-6. Her efforts garnered her all-conference accolades on the singles team for the second straight season.

Wartburg sophomore, Olivia Phillips (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) was named an all-conference singles and doubles player for the first time. Her accolades are in addition to receiving honorable mention recognition in 2019. She finished the season with a 5-2 record in conference play, in a mix of No. 1 and 2 singles, and a 6-2 doubles record with partner Sydney Rottinghaus (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City). Rottinghaus was also named an All-Conference performer in doubles.

Senior Sydney Powers (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) also earned All-Conference doubles honors for the Knights, owning a 6-1 conference record, playing at No.1, 2, and 3. Powers and Rottinghaus teamed up to take silver in the A-Doubles draw at the league’s Individual Tournament. Both Powers and Rottinghaus are earning their first career All-Conference recognitions.

Junior Madi Overmann (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock), joins Phillips as the other All-Conference singles performer for Wartburg. Overmann compiled a conference singles record of 3-4 at No.1. The Waverly, Iowa native is now a two-time All-Conference singles awardee, along with her All-Conference doubles recognition in 2019.
