CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Coe College women's tennis team took down Buena Vista and Nebraska Wesleyan today to claim their ninth regular season American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) title. This is the Kohawks first regular season title since the 2015-16 season.
Coe dominated both matches at the Clark Racquet Center, shutting out Buena Vista, 7-0, in the morning before posting another 7-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in the afternoon. The Kohawks swept all three doubles matches against both opponents before winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Against Buena Vista, Addison Leasure and Aisha Gurung opened doubles with a 6-2 victory, while Alice Tysoe and Alli Hagness posted a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Cosette Gaines and Alexa Cohen completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 victory at No. 3. In singles, Sophia Fain, Gurung, Tysoe, Lucille Rozeboom, Carlie Miller and Cohen each earned straight-set victories to complete the 7-0 shutout.
Coe carried that momentum into its afternoon matchup with Nebraska Wesleyan. Leasure and Gurung earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, Hagness and Tysoe recorded a 6-2 victory at No. 2, and Gaines and Fain completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0 win at No. 3. Fain, Leasure, Gurung, Tysoe, Hagness and Rozeboom then each won their singles matches in straight sets to secure the second 7-0 shutout of the day.
The Coe Kohawks have now earned the No. 1-seed in the A-R-C Tournament. Coe will have a first-round bye in the tournament this spring with the remaining seeds yet to be determined. The A-R-C Tournament will begin with first round action on Tuesday, April 27. The semifinals will be held Thursday, April 29 with the championship on Saturday, May 1.
Women's tennis student-athletes will be in action next weekend at the A-R-C Women's Tennis Individual Tournament. This will run Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10 in Waterloo and Waverly with Wartburg College serving as the host.
