CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced that Loras College women’s golfer
Mallory Gardiner (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes) and Simpson College women’s tennis player
Anna Wanek (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) have been named American Rivers Co-Female Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 4, 2020.
Co-Female Athlete of the Week – Women’s Golf – Golfer of the Week
Mallory Gardiner, Loras College
Jr., Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes
- Gardiner was the highest placing A-R-C golfer AT THE Simpson College Invitational September 20.
- In a field of 49, Gardiner tied for fifth place, alongside Nebraska Wesleyan’s Savington, both being seven strokes behind the first-place finisher.
- The Monticello, Ind. native posted a season-best round of 86.
- As a team, the Duhawks placed 8th (432, +148).
- Gardiner is the first Duhawk to earn Golfer of the Week honors since Abby Potts on September 30, 2012.
- This is the junior’s first career Golfer of the Week honor; and the fourth-ever Duhawk to earn the accolade since Golfer of the Week began in 2001.
Co-Female Athlete of the Week – Women’s Tennis – Player of the Week
Anna Wanek, Simpson College
Jr., Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic
- Wanek remains undefeated in singles competition this season after picking up four wins on the week, improving to 7-0 to lead the A-R-C.
- The junior defeated Buena Vista University’s Rachel Brockeny 6-1, 6-1 on September 29.
- In a thriller on Oct. 3 Wanek came back to defeat reigning conference MVP and A-singles champion Devon Bourget of Luther (2-6, 6-4, 17-15).
- In a doubleheader on Oct. 4 in Mount Vernon, Iowa, the Urbandale, Iowa native defeated Cornells Liv Aractingi (6-3, 6-2) and Wisconsin Lutheran’s Kaytlyn Hartfield (6-1, 6-1) to end the week undefeated.
- In doubles, Wanek and Emily King, at No. 1, defeated BVU’s Brockney/Lange (8-0), Cornell’s Fievet/Cerone (8-3), and Wisconsin Lutheran’s Hartfield/Pope (8-0).
- The Storm split the four matches, defeating Buena Vista (7-2) and Cornell College (5-4).
- Wanek has collected back-to-back Player of the Week accolades for the Storm and her second her career honor (10/5/20, 9/28/20).
