# 2016 Offensive MVP

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The American Rivers Conference announced today that Loras College junior forward Tigrio Huerta (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) has been selected as the league's Offensive MVP and Central College senior defender Taylor Petkovich (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was named Defensive MVP. Central College head coach Garry Laidlaw, assistants Will FoskettGreg Walter, and Zach Jensen were voted American Rivers Coaching Staff of the Year. In addition to the major awards, the conference announced the 22-member All-Conference team.

As Offensive MVP, Huerta also earns a spot on the 22-member All-Conference squad, his first career honor. The Delavan, Wis. Native is the second Offensive MVP award winner from Loras, joining Kevin Cavers (2013). Prior to the MVP award being split to recognize an offensive and defensive standout in 2013, Loras had six players named conference MVP. Additionally, since 2013 the Duhawks have seen two players earn Defensive MVP honors.

In eight conference matches Huerta led the league in points (17), goals (6), and shots on goal (16). Additionally, he added five assists to rank second in the conference standings.

Petkovich becomes the first player to receive Defensive MVP honors for the Dutch. Former Central standout, Brett McKenzie earned MVP accolades in 2010, prior to the league splitting the award to honor a defensive and offensive player. This year’s All-Conference selection marks the second consecutive honor for Petkovich. He also picked up honorable mention recognition in 2017.

The Littleton, Colo. native helped the Central defense post the second-best goals-against average in league play (.730) and the second fewest goals allowed (6). Additionally, he added one goal and one assist in eight conference matches.

In his 21st year at the helm of the Central men’s soccer program, head coach Laidlaw, and assistants Foskett, Walter, and Jensen guided the Dutch to their first league title in program history. The 2019 season marked the third time Laidlaw's Dutch have finished atop the league standings but the first time they would hoist the championship trophy. Both in 2002 and 2008 the Dutch fell to tiebreaker criteria when determining the league winner. 2019 also caps a dramatic turnaround for a squad that posted a 3-5 league record in 2017 and went 1-6 in 2015. At the conclusion of this year’s conference play, Central finished with a 6-1-1 A-R-C record and a 14-2-2 overall mark. This is the fourth time Central is earning Coaching Staff of the Year honors with Laidlaw heading the program (2016, 2008, 2002).

In addition to Petkovich, Central had three players named All-Conference. Senior, Andrew Mathys (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) collected one of two goalkeeper spots on this year’s team, earning him his first All-Conference selection. With 721:16 minutes in goal during conference play, Mathys posted a 6-1-1 record, with three of the six wins coming by way of shutout. Additionally, he ranked second in the league in save percentage (.813) and third in goals allowed average (.749).

Dutch First-year players, Nick Ashton (Ankeny, Iowa/Centennial) and Charlie Pritchard (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) also earned a spot on this year’s All-Conference squad.
