Luther's Kranz, Wartburg's Shulte Named A-R-C Athletes of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The American Rivers Conference announced that Luther College women’s golfer Morgan Kranz (Sauk Centre, Minn./Sauk Centre) and Wartburg College football player Kolin Schulte (Anamosa, Iowa/Anamosa) have been named American Rivers Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 6, 2019. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s golf, football, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis, and volleyball.

 
Female Athlete of the Week – Women’s Golf – Golfer of the Week9611
Morgan Kranz, Luther College
Jr., Sauk Centre, Minn./Sauk Centre
  • Kranz earned medalist and league MVP honors at the A-R-C women’s golf championship.
  • The junior was the only player in the field to record two rounds in the 70s.
  • Her final-round 77 came on the heels of a round-two score of 75 and an opening-round 80.
  • Kranz bested the field by six strokes, becoming the first Luther golfer to win the championship since 1998 (Kara Reiman).
  • Her efforts helped Luther to a third-place team finish at the league championship.
  • This is the junior’s fifth Golfer of the Week award, and fourth this season (10/7/19, 9/23/19, 9/16/19, 9/10/19, 9/24/17).

 
Male Athlete of the Week – Football – Offensive Player of the Week11187
Kolin Schulte, Wartburg College
Sr., WR, Anamosa, Iowa/Anamosa
  • Wartburg senior wide receiver Kolin Schulte recorded over 100 receiving yards for a third-straight game, tallying career-highs with 11 catches for 190 yards.
  • He caught three touchdown passes, the third time this season he has brought in multiple TD receptions in a game.
  • The wideouts efforts helped Wartburg to a 48-27 win over Buena Vista.
  • The Knights are ranked 11th in the most recent AFCA top 25 poll and 18th in D3football.com’s poll.
  • Wartburg next faces Nebraska Wesleyan on Sat., Oct. 12.
  • This is Shulte’s first Offensive Player of the Week honor.

 
Men’s Cross Country – Runner of the Week11189
Sam Pinkowski, Wartburg College
Jr., La Crosse, Wis./La Crosse Central
  • Wartburg junior Sam Pinkowski led the Knights to victory at the 22nd Annual Dan Huston Invitational Saturday, Oct. 5.
  • Pinkowski finished in first place with an 8k time of 26:08.6, leading the No. 4-ranked Knights past No. 3 WashU.
  • In a field of 274 total runners the junior finished 8.3 seconds ahead of second place.
  • Pinkowski finished second at the 2019 A-R-C Championships and earned All-American honors, finishing 27th at the NCAA Championships.
  • This is Pinkowski’s fourth Runner of the Week accolade (10/7/19, 10/1/18, 9/17/18, 10/1/17).

 
Women’s Cross Country – Runner of the Week9991
Kassie Rosenbum, Loras College
So., Guttenberg, Iowa/Clayton Ridge
  • Rosenbum placed second at the Wartburg College Dan Huston Invitational on Sat., Oct. 5.
  • Completed the 6K course in a time of 22:45.90, placing second to defending NCAA Division III National Champion Paige Lawler (WashU) by only four seconds.
  • Loras placed fourth overall.
  • Rosenbum earned All-American honors in 2018, finishing 31st at the NCAA Division III Championships.
  • The Guttenberg native also earned All-Conference honors a season ago, finishing third at the Conference Championships.
  • This is Rosenbum’s second Cross Country Runner of the Week honor (9/23/19, 9/2/19).

 
Football – Defensive Player of the Week11184
Brayden Egli, Central College
So., S, Saint Charles, Iowa/I-35
  • Central sophomore safety Brayden Egli had a career-high 11 tackles, including 8 solo stops in the Dutch 45-14 win over Luther.
  • He forced a Norse fumble on 4th and goal from the 1 yard in the fourth quarter to keep the score 38-7.
  • Central moved its record to 4-0 and jumped into the AFCA top 25 at No. 23.
  • The Dutch next host Dubuque on Sat., Oct 12.
  • This is the first Defensive Player of the Week award for Egli.

 
Football – Special Teams Player of the Week11181
Eric Pacheco, Buena Vista University
Jr., RS/WR, Kearney, Neb./Kearney Catholic
  • Pacheco picked up a fumbled kick-off by another BVU player and returned it 88 yards for a TD in the second quarter against No.11/18 Wartburg.
  • The return was his third career kick return for a TD.
  • He finished with 144 yards on just two returns.
  • On offense he added a team-high 10 catches for 151 yards against.
  • Buena Vista is 2-3 on the year and next faces Coe Sat., Oct. 12.
  • This is Pacheco’s second Special Teams Player of the Week honor (10/7/19, 9/3/17).

 
Men’s Soccer – Defensive Player of the Week11185
Taylor Petkovich, Central College
Sr., D, Littleton, Colo./Heritage
  • A starting defender and captain for Central, Petkovich played all 90 minutes in Central's 3-2 victory over No. 9 Loras on Sat., Oct. 5.
  • He also had an assist on Central's first goal.
  • Petkovich and the Dutch defense own a 1.25 goals against average through 12 contests.
  • Central is now 10-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play.
  • This is Petkovich’s second Defensive Player of the Week accolade (10/7/19, 10/15/18).

 
Men’s Soccer – Offensive Player of the Week11186
Matthew West, Central College
Fr., F, Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Southeast Polk
  • In a key conference match-up with No.9 Loras, first year forward, Matthew West scored the game winner in the 50th minute.
  • Central's 3-2 victory over No.9 Loras was Central's first win over Loras since 2008.
  • Central is now 10-1-1 overall, 2-0-0 in conference play and receiving votes in both the United Soccer Coaches Association and D3soccer.com top 25 polls.
  • This is the first Offensive Player of the Week award for West.

 
Women’s Soccer – Defensive Player of the Week11188
Hailey Osburn, Wartburg College
So., D, Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny
  • Wartburg second year defender Hailey Osburn had a part in a 1-0-1 week for Wartburg, as the Knights disallowed any goals during a 0-0 draw at No. 17 St. Thomas and a 7-0 win over Buena Vista.
  • Osburn scored her first goal of the season in the Knight’s win over Buena Vista.
  • The Wartburg defense owns a 1.00 goals against average on the year.
  • The Knights are now 7-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in league play.
  • This is Osburn’s second Defensive Player of the Week honor (107/19, 10/22/18).

 
Women’s Soccer – Offensive Player of the Week9613
Kate Luers, Wartburg College
So., F, Middletown, Iowa/Danville
  • Wartburg second year forward Kate Luers scored twice and added an assist during the Knights' 7-0 win over Buena Vista.
  • The Buena Vista match marked the third time this season she has recorded a multi-goal performance. 
  • With 11 goals on the year, Luers leads the A-R-C.
  • Wartburg is 7-1-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in conference play.
  • The Knights are back in action Wed., Oct. 9 against Dubuque.
  • Luers is picking up her second Offensive Player of the Week award (10/7/19, 9/9/19).

 
Women’s Tennis – Player of the Week11190
Kelsey Kruse, Luther College
Sr., Decorah, Iowa/Decorah
  • Kruse helped lead Luther claim the 2019 A-R-C regular season championship.
  • She capped off the championship week with a 2-0 record in singles and doubles.
  • Luther defeated Central (8-1) and Simpson (9-0) cap off league play with an undefeated record.
  • At No. 3 Kruse defeated Kennedi Wright of Simpson (6-2, 6-1) and Brownwyn Metcalf of Central (6-1, 6-3).
  • In doubles she played with Lexi Hastings, Fr., Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie.
  • The duo defeated Megan Grubb/Lorin Miller of Simpson (8-3) and Lauryn Mize/Karleigh Schilling of Central (8-7).
  • The doubles team finished the A-R-C schedule undefeated with a record of 7-0.
  • Kruse is earning her second career Player of the week award (10/7/19, 9/17/17).

 
Volleyball – Defensive Player of the Week11182
Summer Goss, Buena Vista University
Sr., L, Treynor, Iowa/Treynor
  • Goss led the Beavers with 68 digs on the week, helping BVU go 4-0 overall.
  • She tallied 27 digs during a thrilling 5-set comeback road win at Simpson to help the team improve to 2-1 in A-R-C play.
  • In BVU’s 3-0 win over Finalandia, Goss recorded 13 digs and 1 ace.
  • She picked up 15 digs in the 3-0 victory over Grace Christian.
  • In the Beaver’s 3-0 win over Mount Mary she added another 13 digs.
  • Goss finished the weekend with 10 ace serves which moved her into fifth place on program's all-time list.
  • Her 68 digs move her to within 15 of fifth place on BVU’s all-time list.
  • She currently ranks fourth in A-R-C overall in digs/set and 12th in aces/set.
  • Goss is now a three-time Defensive Player of the Week award winner (10/7/19, 9/10/18, 10/15/17).

 
Volleyball – Offensive Player of the Week11183
Sydney McLaren, Buena Vista University
So., OH, Council Bluffs, Iowa/St. Albert
  • Second year outside hitter Sydney McLaren led the Beavers with 50 kills on the week to help BVU go 4-0 overall.
  • She posted a double-double during BVU’s comeback win at Simpson, including a team-high 17 kills, to help the team improve to 2-1 in A-R-C play.
  • Named the Most Outstanding Player at the SISU Classic over the weekend.
  • Finished the three matches with 33 kills and only three errors.
  • Currently ranked second during A-R-C play this season in kills/set (3.50).
  • This is McLaren’s second Offensive Player of the Week honor (10/7/19, 9/9/18).
