CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The American Rivers Conference announced today that Luther College junior
Devon Bourget (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) has been selected Women’s Tennis Player of the Year for the 2019 season. The Luther College coaching staff, directed by head coach
Adam Strand and assisted by
Britta Pressler, earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors. In addition to the major awards the league announced the 22-member All-Conference team.
Strand, in this his ninth season at the helm of the women's team, guided the Norse to their 28th conference title in program history and third in the last four years. The regular season championship clinched the top seed and host for the A-R-C NCAA Automatic Qualifier (AQ) Tournament April 24-25, 2020 in Decorah, Iowa. The Norse finished conference play with a perfect 8-0 mark and a 9-1 overall record. Luther's Coaching Staff of the Year honor is the third under the direction of Strand and the 19th for program.
Bourget, in this her junior season, becomes a two-time All-Conference honoree in addition to her MVP accolades. She earned both singles and doubles all-conference accolades a season ago and received honorable mention recognition in 2017. Bourget is the 17th Norse player to earn MVP honors and the first since 2009. In 2019, Bourget won the A-R-C individual tournament A-flight singles title and partnered with
Shelby Cook (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) to claim gold in the A-doubles draw. She finished conference dual play with an 8-0 record at No.1 singles and a 7-0 mark at No.1 doubles. Additionally, Bourget became a six-time A-R-C Player of the Week award winner in 2019 (10/14/19, 9/30/19, 9/23/19, 9/16/19, 4/22/19, 9/23/18).
Cook picked up all-conference singles and doubles accolades for the second consecutive season. The second-year player took silver in the A-singles flight at the A-R-C individual tournament in addition to the gold earned in the A-Doubles draw. Cook finished conference play with a 7-0 record at No.2 singles and a mark of 7-0 at No.1 doubles. Luther's
Kelsey Kruse (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) earned her third consecutive selection to the all-conference doubles team and was voted to the singles team for the first time. Kruse compiled a 5-2 record at No.3 singles during league play and went 7-0 at No.2 doubles, with partner
Lexi Hastings (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie). First-year player, Hastings, was also voted to the all-conference doubles team. The duo of Kruse and Hastings finished second in the A-Doubles draw at the A-R-C individual tournament.
Central College's
Karleigh Schilling (Swisher, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) earned her third straight all-conference singles and doubles honors. Shilling finished her third year in the league with a 4-3 mark at No.1 singles, a 5-2 record at No.2 doubles, and went 1-0 at No.1 doubles.
Second-year player,
Isabella Hoppenjans of Coe College (Edmond, Okla./Casady) picked up her second singles and doubles all-conference accolades. Hoppenjans went 2-4 at No.1 singles and 1-0 at No.2 singles during league play. At No.1 doubles, Hoppenjans had a record of 3-1 and posted an identical mark at No.2 doubles.
Eliza Sundermann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) capped off her junior season with selection to the all-conference singles team for the second consecutive year, in addition to earning all-conference doubles honors. In conference play, she finished 1-2 at No.1 singles, 1-1 at No.2 singles, and 3-2 at No.1 doubles. Kohawk first-year,
Emma Lassen (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) also earned all-conference singles recognition. Lassen concluded conference play with marks of 1-0 at No.2 singles and 5-0 at No.3 singles.
Loras College's
Audrey Hinz (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) added her third all-conference singles accolades to her list of accomplishments, in addition to being named to the doubles team for the second straight season. The junior Duhawk went 2-4 at No.1 singles and 4-4 at No.1 doubles during league competition.
In her first year,
Brooke Sailer (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) of Nebraska Wesleyan went 6-2 at No.1 singles and 3-5 at No.1 doubles against league competition. Her efforts garnered her all-conference accolades on both the singles and doubles teams.
Simpson College's
Emily King (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) posted a No.1 singles mark of 4-3 and went 4-4 at No.1 doubles during conference action. The second-year player was voted to both the singles and doubles teams, the first all-conference accolades of her career.
Wartburg senior,
Lauren O'Brian (Ely, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) was named an all-conference singles player for the second consecutive year and picked up doubles honors for the first time. Her accolades are in addition to receiving honorable mention recognition in 2017. O'Brian finished with a conference singles record of 2-0 at No.2 and 5-1 at No.3. In doubles play she finished 6-2 at the No.2 position. Second-year player,
Madison Overmann (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) of Wartburg collected all-conference singles and doubles honors for the first time in her career. Overmann finished conference play with a record of 4-1 at No.1 singles and a mark of 1-0 at No.2 singles. Her doubles season concluded with a record of 5-3 at No.2. Overmann teamed with
Hannah Fox (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) at the A-R-C individual tournament to take third in the A-doubles flight. Additionally, Overmann finished fourth in the A-singles draw. Fox earned her third consecutive all-conference doubles selection this season. A year ago she was also named to the all-conference singles team. Fox wrapped up her final season of conference play with a mark of 5-3 at No.1 doubles.
