CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Coe College freshman Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa / Davenport Assumption) has been selected Iowa Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year for the 2014 season, while Coe head coach Kris Tiedt has been selected as the 2014 Iowa Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year.

Resnick posted a 14-2 singles record during the fall season with her only losses coming to Carleton’s Joyce Yu in the Round of 32 at the USTAITA Midwest Region Championship and to Dubuque’s Arantxa Martinez during Coe’s regular-season dual with the Spartans. She went 9-1 at No. 1 singles, including 5-1 in IIAC play. Resnick also posted a 12-3 mark in doubles (10-3 with Sarah Lasecki, 1-0 with Diannah Watson, 1-0 with Jamie White), competing at the No. 2 position. Two defeats came at the USTA/ITA Midwest Region Championships and the last came to teammates Laura Birky and Jordan Ferree in the Flight A final at the Iowa Conference Individual Tournament.

Seeded second, she won the Flight A singles title at the 2014 Iowa Conference Women’s Tennis Individual Tournament with a 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10) victory over the top-seeded Martinez to avenge one of her two losses. Resnick advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ferree in the semifinals after topping Wartburg’s Melissa Davis (6-2, 6-0) and Luther’s Adriana DePaolis (6-2, 6-3) in her first two matches.

Playing with Lasecki in the Flight A doubles draw, the unseeded tandem shut out their opening opponent before surviving a 9-8 (5) tiebreaker win over Luther’s third-seeded team of Maggie Helms and Olivia Heitz in the quarterfinals and posting an 8-6 win over the second-seeded team of Kayla Kuethe and Melissa Davis of Wartburg in the semifinals before falling to Birky and Ferree in the final.

Resnick is one of four Coe student-athletes to be named Iowa Conference Player of the Year in women’s tennis, joining four-time winner Molly Fiala (2005-06-07-08), three-time winner Tai Lucero (2010-12-13) and Michelle Schupbach (2011).

Tiedt, in her first season as head coach and her sixth season on staff, helped guide Coe to a perfect 11-0 mark during the fall season, including a perfect 7-0 mark in IIAC play to secure the school's seventh Iowa Conference women’s tennis title. The Kohawks will host the Iowa Conference NCAA Automatic Qualifier Tournament next April. This marks the second consecutive year Tiedt has been named IIAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year – she received last year’s honor while an assistant – and the seventh time a Coe coach has been named IIAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year. Longtime men’s coach Eric Rodgers received the previous five honors (2006-07-08-11-12).

The Iowa Conference also announced its 2014 All-Conference Women's Tennis Team. Five Coe players were named overall with Resnick, Laura Birky and Jordan Ferree being named in both singles and doubles, Amy Sebastian being named in singles and Sarah Lasecki in doubles. Four Luther players also received recognition – Olivia Heitz and Maggie Helms in both singles and doubles, Adriana DePaolis in singles and Jenna Myers in doubles. Central’s Angie Allgood, Loras’ Elizabeth Dickhut and Wartburg’s Kayla Kuethe were also selected in both singles and doubles. Dubuque’s Arantxa Martinez and Wartburg’s Katherine Ross round out the singles selections, while Central’s Megan Davis and Wartburg’s Melissa Davis picked up the final two all-conference spots in doubles.
