Wartburg's Sieck, Buena Vista's Bardole Highlight All-Conference Volleyball Selections

Luther's Lynch, Wartburg's Walker and Frazell Named Coaches of the Year

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced its major award winners and all-conference team for the 2013 volleyball season. Wartburg College senior Ramey Sieck (Fayette, Iowa / North Fayette) has been named the Iowa Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, while Buena Vista University freshman Maddie Bardole (Granger, Iowa / Woodward-Granger) has been named the league's Freshman of the Year. Luther College head coach Danielle Lynch and Wartburg College co-head coaches Jennifer Walker and Doug Frazell, have been named IIAC Coaches of the Year.

Ramey Sieck Repeats as Most Valuable — Sieck, a senior setter, has 1,179 assists heading into Saturday's IIAC Tournament championship match against Coe, averaging 9.28 per set to rank third among IIAC players. She also ranks second on the Wartburg squad in service aces (46) and digs (359), third in total blocks (61) and fourth in kills (219). Her .314 attack percentage currently ranks fourth among all IIAC players while her 0.36 aces per set are sixth. Sieck also posted a league-high 19 double-doubles and has one of the IIAC's four statistical triple-doubles this season (10 kills, 20 digs, 38 assists vs. Coe on Oct. 30).

Sieck has had 20 or more assists in all but one of Wartburg's matches this season, surpassing 40 on five occasions and topping out at 50 in a four-set win over Concordia-Moorhead on October 5. She became the program’s all-time leader in assists (4,234 as of Nov. 7) in the IIAC Tournament semifinal win over Luther. Her 1,179 helpers to date this season ranks seventh, while her total of 1,269 from last season ranks fourth and the 1,078 she dished out as a sophomore in 2011 ranks tenth. Sieck also ranks third in career service aces with 159.

Sieck is the third Wartburg player to earn Most Valuable Player honors following Kim Kelly in 1990 and Ashley Rogers in 2007. She is also the first setter to be named MVP since Loras' Jenny Dziubla in 2008. Sieck is the sixth repeat IIAC MVP and the first since 1999 when Central’s Abbie Brown won the last of her three in succession.

Bardole Takes Honors as Top Freshman — Bardole, an outside hitter, led the Iowa Conference in kills with 102, averaging a league-high 3.78 kills per set. She also ranked eighth in hitting percentage (.238) and tenth in digs (3.52 per set). Overall, she had 416 kills, 339 digs, 29 service aces, 30 assists and 50 blocks (17 solo). The focal point of the Buena Vista attack, Bardole’s kills total is fourth-best since 2003 (the start of the current NCAA scoring format) and a BVU best for a freshman, while her kills-per-set average ranks second over that same span.

Bardole ranked second only to Sieck among league players in double-doubles, finishing with 15. She posted a career-high 23 kills and added 17 assists in a win over Dubuque, BVU’s first IIAC win since 2010. The 23 kills were the sixth-most in a single-match in school history and tied for the second most by an IIAC player in any match this season. The Beavers finished the year 17-12, the 2005 Beavers (17-15) for the second-highest win total in program history. It was a 12 1/2-game improvement over 2012 (6-26).

All-Iowa Conference Team — The All-Iowa Conference volleyball team was also announced. Eight selections on the 15-member team have previously received all-conference honors, led by Sieck. Sieck captured all-league honors for the fourth time to become just the 12th four-time all-IIAC selection and the fourth from Wartburg (Dia Dohlman, Ashley Rogers, Britlyn Sieck). She was a second-team selection as a freshman, a first-team pick as a junior and league MVP in both her junior and senior years. Coe outside hitter Rachel Schaefer and Wartburg middle hitter Kelly Niemann both earned their third league honors, while Coe middle Rachel Bosworth and libero Alissa Wittenburg, Dubuque outside hitter Klaudia Basierak, Luther middle blocker Hannah Wilson and Wartburg middle hitter Bailey Wilson picked up their second all-IIAC honor.

Lynch, Walker and Frazell Named Coaches of the Year — Luther head coach Danielle Lynch and Wartburg co-head coaches Jennifer Walker and Doug Frazell were voted the 2013 Iowa Conference Volleyball Coaches of the Year by their peers. Walker and Frazell led the Knights to a 25-11 mark overall and is receiving votes in the AVCA national poll heading into Saturday’s Iowa Conference Tournament championship match. Wartburg went 7-0 in league play, dropping only three sets. Lynch led the Norse to a 4-3 IIAC mark (16-17 overall) and a tie for third place, the program’s best IIAC finish since 2009 when they tied for second. This is the third time Walker has been named IIAC Coach of the Year, first in 2002 after Wartburg upset Central in the Iowa Conference tournament final to capture a share of the program's first IIAC crown and then a year ago.
