Iowa Conference Men's Soccer Awards Announced

Loras' Cavers Named MVP, Rothert COY; All-Conference Team Named

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras College junior midfielder Kevin Cavers (Arlington Heights, Ill. / St. Viator) has been named the 2012 IIAC Men’s Soccer Most Valuable Player and Loras College head coach Dan Rothert has been named the 2012 IIAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year.

Cavers, the sixth Loras player to be named Iowa Conference Men’s Soccer MVP, has started all 21 games this season for the Duhawks. He is currently tied for the team lead with 19 points on six goals and a team-high seven assists. He also netted a pair of game-winning goals (Saint Mary’s, Minn.; Simpson). In seven Iowa Conference matches, he scored three goals and assisted on five others for a team-high 11 points. He ranked second in the league in scoring with a league-leading assist total.

Rothert led Loras to its seventh Iowa Conference title – and sixth in seven years – with a 7-0-0 league mark and takes a 19-1-1 record into a November 10 NCAA first-round matchup against St. Scholastica (18-4). It is Loras’ eighth straight trip to the NCAA Championships. The Duhawks outscored their league opponents, 27-0, becoming the second IIAC men’s program to go through the conference season without being scored upon (Luther, 2011). Defensively, Loras has allowed only eight goals while posting 15 shutouts in 21 games en route to an 0.38 goals-against average. Those figures place Loras third in goals-against average and eighth in goals allowed in NCAA Division III. The Duhawk offense is also averaging 2.95 goals per game to rank 11th nationally. It is Rothert’s sixth IIAC Coach of the Year honor in men’s soccer.

The IIAC also announced the 2012 All-Iowa Conference Men’s Soccer Team. The 26-member Team includes 15 repeat All-Conference performers. In addition, one of the 13 honorable mention selections is a previous All-Conference performer. Dubuque forward Nick McDonald earned his fourth all-league honor – the last three to the first team. Additionally, Wartburg junior midfielder Bob Brown and senior forward Brandon Cook picked up their third first-team honor in succession, while Central junior midfielder Daniel Peacock was named to the second team for the third straight year.

Iowa Conference champion Loras has nine all-conference performers, including six first-teamers. Dubuque and Luther each had four all-league selections, while Central and Wartburg both received three honors. All of Wartburg’s honorees were on the first team. Simpson placed a pair of individuals on the second team and, for the second straight year, Coe had its lone representative (Jacob Johnson) land on the first team.
