CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther College senior goalkeeper Steve O’Meara (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) has been named the 2011 IIAC Men’s Soccer Most Valuable Player and Luther College head coach Chris Garcia-Prats has been named the 2011 IIAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year.
O’Meara, Luther’s first Iowa Conference Men’s Soccer MVP since current Simpson men’s coach Rick Isaacson in 2002, has started all 22 games this season for the Norse. In nearly 2000 minutes in goal, he has allowed only seven goals – no more than one in any game – while posting an 0.32 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage, and 82 saves en route to a 17-3-2 mark. O’Meara leads all IIAC players in goals-against average and save percentage and has been credited with 12 shutouts in 22 games. In eight Iowa Conference matches, O’Meara made 34 saves and did not allow a goal in over 725 minutes in goal.
Garcia-Prats led Luther to its seventh title – and its first since 2002 – with a 7-0-1 league mark. The Norse outscored their league opponents, 19-0, becoming the first IIAC men’s program to go through the conference season without being scored upon. Luther, which is in its sixth NCAA tournament overall and its first since 2002, takes a 17-3-2 record into a November 18 sectional semifinal against Hope (12-4-3). It is Garcia-Prats’ first IIAC Coach of the Year honor.
The IIAC also announced the 2011 All-Iowa Conference Men’s Soccer Team. The 26-member Team includes 11 repeat All-Conference performers. In addition, four of the 12 honorable mention selections are previous All-Conference performers. Four individuals – Coe defender Joe Frerichs, Dubuque forwards Nick McDonald and Pablo Martinez and Loras goalkeeper Nate DuBois – each earned their third all-league honor.
Iowa Conference champion Luther and runner-up Loras each had seven All-Conference performers, with the Norse securing five first-team selections and the Duhawks three. Dubuque collected four all-league honors and Wartburg three with two first-teamers apiece. Central had three second team selections, Coe had its lone representative (Frerichs) land on the first team, and Simpson placed one on the second team to close out this year’s all-IIAC selections.
