CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its major football awards and All-Conference team for the 2011 season. University of Dubuque senior wide receiver Michael Zweifel (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) has been named the 2011 IIAC Football Offensive Most Valuable Player, while Luther College senior linebacker Kyle McGivney (Apple River, Ill./Warren) has been named the 2011 IIAC Football Defensive Most Valuable Player. University of Dubuque head coach Stan Zweifel has been named the 2011 IIAC Football Coach of the Year.
2011 Offensive Most Valuable Player – Michael Zweifel, WR, University of Dubuque
In 11 games, Zweifel caught 140 passes for 1,915 yards and 25 touchdowns, averaging 12.73 receptions and 174.1 yards per game to lead NCAA Division III. He also ranks second in Division III in scoring (14.18 ppg) and seventh in all-purpose yards (181.3 ypg). He completed his career as the NCAA’s all-divisions leader in career receptions with 463 (176 at Wis.-River Falls; 287 at Dubuque) and ranked second in career receiving yards (all divisions) with 5,979.
He surpassed 15 receptions and 200 receiving yards on four occasions this season, including season-highs with 18 catches for 259 yards against Wartburg. Zweifel also established new Iowa Conference single-season marks for receptions (105) and receiving yards (1,444), breaking marks he set in 2009. A contributor on defense and special teams as well, Zweifel started the final eight games of the season in the defensive backfield and finished the year with 29 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, four pass break-ups, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. He posted a season-high six solo tackles and matched his season-high with seven stops in the Spartans’ NCAA first-round loss to North Central (Ill.). He also returned nine punts for 72 yards throughout the year. Zweifel led the IIAC in receptions per game (13.1), receiving yards per game (180.5) and scoring (22 TDs, 1 2XP; 16.8 ppg) and ranked second in all-purpose yards (188.8 ypg) to teammate Justin Spaulding (196.1 ypg).
Zweifel is just the second Dubuque player to be named an Iowa Conference MVP, joining Rick Steil, who captured the award in 1979.
2011 Defensive Most Valuable Player – Kyle McGivney, LB, Luther College
McGivney , now a three-time First Team All-Iowa Conference selection, made 145 tackles in 10 games this season (63 solo) to rank second in NCAA Division III to only Mike Hendrick, a junior linebacker from Knox who finished the year with 157 stops. He posted an Iowa Conference-season high 20 tackles (six solo) against Dubuque on October 29.
He also intercepted five passes, broke up two others, made two tackles for loss, had one sack and blocked two kicks while leading a Luther defense that led the Iowa Conference in pass efficiency defense (116.72) and turnover margin (+0.80) and ranked second in pass defense (191.0 ypg).
McGivney set the NCAA Division III career tackles record with 546 stops. This total also ranks second on the career All-Divisions list. Former Illinois State University linebacker Boomer Grigsby holds the record with 550. Last season, McGivney set the Division III single-season record with 198 tackles.
McGivney becomes the fourth different Luther player to earn Iowa Conference MVP honors and the first since quarterback Paul Hefty shared the honor with William Penn’s Darryl Kosut in 1986.
2011 Iowa Conference Football Coach of the Year – Stan Zweifel, University of Dubuque
Zweifel led the Spartans to a 9-2 mark overall, the school’s seventh Iowa Conference football title – its first since 1980 – and a berth in the 2011 NCAA Division III Football Championship. Under his guidance this year, Dubuque ranks among the top-three in the Conference in 19 statistical areas including leading the IIAC in scoring offense (44.9 ppg), total offense (512.2 ypg), passing offense (334.0 ypg), pass efficiency (198.5), first downs (25.8 per game), third-down percentage (50-of-86, 58.1 percent), and red zone offense, scoring on 87.5 percent (35 of 40) of red zone chances. The Spartans also ranked second in passing defense (208.6 ypg) and punting (33.5 net ypg) and third in scoring defense (22.9 ppg), rushing offense (178.2 ypg), interceptions (8), sacks (19), fewest sacks against (11) and turnover margin (+0.50).
Zweifel, in his third season, captured his 50th career victory during the season with a 49-42 victory at Coe on November 5. He is the fourth Dubuque coach to be named Iowa Conference Football Coach of the Year, accounting for five total honors (Maury Waugh, 1972; Don Birmingham, 1979-80; Don Turner, 1987).
2011 All-Iowa Conference Football Team
The IIAC also announced today the 2011 All-Conference Football Team. The 54-member Team includes 21 repeat All-Conference honorees, including seven – McGivney, Coe quarterback Brad Boyle, Dubuque running back Justin Spaulding, Buena Vista strong safety Alan Bladt, Wartburg punter Robby Salmon, Central quarterback Nate Snead, and Central wide receiver Jeremy Snead – who become three-time All-Conference performers. Each of the honors earned by Boyle, Bladt, and McGivney were first-team honors, including league MVP honors from Boyle in 2009 (overall) and 2010 (offense). Also, Wartburg’s Josh VanDenHul scored his fourth all-Iowa Conference honor. An all-IIAC first-teamer at defensive back each of the last two seasons, VanDenHul also earned a pair of all-IIAC honors as a return specialist (2008 first team, 2010 second team). A first-team receiver for the second time, 2011 Offensive MVP Michael Zweifel also received honorable mention from the coaches as a defensive back.
Wartburg College and Central College each had an IIAC-best 10 All-Conference players. Iowa Conference champion University of Dubuque followed closely behind with nine selections, while Coe College and Simpson College each had seven players picked. Buena Vista University received four All-Conference honors, followed by Loras College (three), and Cornell College and Luther College (two each). Dubuque and Wartburg had six players each selected to the First Team while Coe had five.
