CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Averie Hike's journey as a student-athlete at Nebraska Wesleyan University is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of community.

As a member of the Prairie Wolves' women's soccer team, Hike has embraced the challenges and opportunities that come with competing in the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C).

For Hike, being a student-athlete in the A-R-C is about more than just the competition.

It's about pushing herself physically and mentally, and being part of a community that values growth and improvement.

"The community in the A-R-C is extremely competitive, and everyone is here for the right reasons," Hike said. "Being surrounded by other athletes who have the same mentality is a big factor in growth, improvement, and success."

Overcoming Adversity

Hike's journey has not been without its challenges. In her sophomore year of high school, she suffered a near career-ending concussion that left her unable to speak, walk, or even hold her neck up.

The road to recovery was long and difficult, but Hike refused to give up.

With the support of her family, friends, and faith, she persevered through 10 months of rehabilitation.

"I couldn't imagine a life without soccer, and I didn't," Hike said. "I refuse to let fear overtake my God-given purpose. It's not me alone who has persevered, but God, family, and friends led me to where I am now."

The Power of Mentorship

Throughout her journey, Hike has been fortunate to have the guidance and support of her longtime coach, Angelo Bravo. Bravo has trained Hike since she was in seventh grade, and their relationship has been instrumental in her development as a player and as a person.

"Through the ups and downs in life, Angelo has never doubted me or given up on me," Hike said. "He believes in me and calms my anxiety when I put too much pressure on myself. I am the player I am today because he showed up for me and put in countless hours for my own good."

A Legacy of Empowerment
?
Hike's proudest accomplishment in the A-R-C came during her freshman year when she was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Despite a challenging season for the team, Hike's individual achievements were a testament to her determination and hard work.

As she continues her journey as a student-athlete, Hike hopes to leave a legacy that empowers her teammates and peers to believe in themselves and overcome any obstacles they face.

"I hope my story encourages others to know that setbacks and mistakes don't define them," Hike said. "Come to practice with an open mind, willing to get better, and everything will fall into place."

A Message of Resilience

Hike's story is a reminder that success and happiness are not defined by the challenges we face, but by the support and encouragement we receive from those around us.

"Surround yourself with loved ones and a safe community, those who cheer for you and want to see the best out of you," Hike said. "Don't give up on yourself or second guess your worth. That's what makes the difference in success and happiness."

As Hike continues to make her mark on the soccer field and in the classroom, she remains committed to embracing the challenges and opportunities that come her way, and to inspiring others to do the same.
