CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Matthew Franzen, a dedicated men's basketball student-athlete at Luther College, cherishes his experience competing in the American Rivers Conference.

For Franzen, it's not just about the game on the court; it's about finding the perfect balance between academics and athletics.

"The level of competition is high, which pushes me to grow as a player, but it also gives me the flexibility to focus on my studies and personal development," Franzen said. "Plus, the sense of community in the conference is incredible. I have had the ability to make some lifelong friends throughout my time competing in the A-R-C."

Why Luther College?
---

Franzen's journey to becoming a Norse was a unique one. Luther College has always been a part of his life, as he grew up in Decorah, Iowa, with both of his parents working at the institution.

When it came time to choose a college, Franzen knew Luther was the perfect fit for him and the field he wanted to study.

"I grew up in Decorah, and both my parents work at Luther, so I spent a lot of time around campus throughout my childhood," Franzen said. "When it came time for me to start visiting and looking into schools, Luther was no doubt the best fit for me and the field I wanted to study."

Franzen's recruiting experience was unique, as he went through much of the normal process even with his father as his coach.

The Luther admissions team played a crucial role in getting him on campus and hosting engaging visit days for both academics and athletics. The warm welcome from the faculty, staff, and students made Luther feel like home, and Franzen's decision to attend was an easy one.

A memorable moment
---

Reflecting on his time at Luther, Franzen fondly recalls his favorite sports memory. It was during his sophomore year, when Luther faced Wartburg at home, with a large number of students cheering them on.

The energy in the gym and the level of competition between the two teams was incredible. The fans storming the court after the win created a surreal and unforgettable experience that Franzen and his team will forever cherish.

Beyond the court
---

When he's not competing, Franzen enjoys fishing, especially with his younger brother, who is in high school in Decorah. Fishing for bass or pike together provides a peaceful and enjoyable pastime for the Franzen brothers.

Outside of his athletic pursuits, Franzen is actively involved in Luther's residence life program, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and organizing youth programs in the community.

He believes in pushing himself outside his comfort zone, which led him to join the track team during the spring of his senior year. Despite the initial nerves, Franzen met amazing people and had incredible opportunities, including scoring in the conference outdoor meet.

Looking ahead
---

Looking towards the future, Franzen aspires to follow in his father's footsteps by coaching at the college level or becoming an athletic director at the high school or college level.

His father has been the most influential person in his life, serving as an unwavering supporter and exceptional father throughout Franzen's journey. His guidance, dedication, and faith have inspired Franzen both on and off the court, shaping him into the person he is today.
