The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced today its major baseball awards and the 32-member All-Conference team for the 2023 season. University of Dubuque shortstop
Colin Husko (Fr., Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) was voted as the American Rivers Conference Position Player of the Year and Buena Vista University’s
Morgan Smith (So., Boone, Iowa/Boone) has been tabbed the A-R-C Pitcher of the Year. For the fifth time in his career (2002, 2010, 2014, 2022, 2023), Buena Vista Head Coach
Steve Eddie was voted as the A-R-C Coach of the Year by his peers.
Husko is the first player from the University of Dubuque to earn a major award on the All-Conference team. The first-year shortstop compiled a batting average of .464 through 23 A-R-C games which sits tied for the conference best. Husko started in 22 of these games where he recorded 39 hits including five doubles and a triple. The Wauconda native had a conference leading on-base percentage of .609 after getting walked 19 times and hit by pitches 12 times.
Smith is the second pitcher from Buena Vista to earn Pitcher of the Year honors after the award was split in 2008. The right-hander joins Jon Ringblom (2014) as the only Beavers recipients. Prior to the award being split, Buena Vista had four players earn league MVP: Nick Beard (2002), Dale Knight (1980), Jeff Trost (1975, 1976), and Pat McMullen (1970).
The Beaver sophomore pitched in six league games, starting in all of them. Smith had a fifth-best ERA in conference contests at 2.80. The Boone prep posted a perfect 6-0 record. In 45.0 innings pitched during league play, Smith allowed his opponents to hit just .297 off him. The Boone native recorded two complete games while surrendering 17 runs and striking out 36 batters.
Eddie, in his 23
rd season at the helm of the Buena Vista University baseball team, is picking up his fifth-career Coach of the Year accolade. He is just one of two coaches in Beavers baseball history to be named Coach of the Year. Eddie guided the Beavers to an overall record of 30-9 and a 20-3 mark in league play, winning the second-straight A-R-C regular season title. The Beavers coach led the team to a .359 batting average overall, leading the A-R-C. Eddie’s staff is made up of
Steve Sonka – Pitching Coach and
Nate Hanner – Assistant Coach.
The All-American Rivers Conference first-team highlighted players from eight of the conference’s nine schools. The 16-member first team saw nine individuals earn All-Conference accolades for at least the second time in their careers. Buena Vista led the way with six first-team All-Conference honorees.
