The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced today its major baseball awards and the 32-member All-Conference team for the 2022 season. Simpson College right-handed pitcher
Brady Held (Sr., Indianola, Iowa/Indianola) was voted as the American Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Year and Buena Vista University’s
Evan Taylor (Fr., Redfield, Iowa/Panorama) has been tabbed the A-R-C Position Player of the Year. For the fourth time in his career (2002, 2010, 2014), Buena Vista Head Coach
Steve Eddie was voted as the A-R-C Coach of the Year by his peers.
Held is the first pitcher from Simpson to earn Pitcher of the Year honors. The Storm won the league MVP award three times prior to the awards being split in 2008 to honor a pitcher and a position player. Previous Simpson MVP honorees include; Joe Blake (1971), Joel Johnson (1991), and Dan Rieck (2004).
The Storm senior pitched in six league games, starting five of them. He had the league’s sixth-best ERA in conference contests at 2.88, being one of seven A-R-C pitchers to hold a sub-3.00 ERA. In 34.1 innings pitched in league games, Held allowed his opponents to hit just .181 off him, which is good for second-best in the league. The Indianola native led the league in strikeouts, recording 57. In addition to his performance on the mound for the Storm, Held batted in 18 conference games, holding a .352 batting average. He recorded 19 hits, 17 runs scored, and eight runs batted in (RBI). Five of his hits were doubles and three were homeruns, holding a slugging percentage of .611.
Taylor is the fourth Beaver to earn Position Player of the Year honors, joining Brandon Pietrzyk (2010), Neil Marshall (2016), and Bryce Rheault (2019). The Beavers have also won the league MVP award three times prior to the awards being split in 2008 to honor a pitcher and a position player. Previous Buena Vista MVP honorees include; Pat McMullen (1970), Jeff Trost (1975, 1976), Dale Knight (1980), and Nick Beard (2002).
Taylor, a catcher for the Beavers, started all 24 conference games, carrying a bat with a lot of pop this season, hitting a conference-best 14 doubles and tied for second with three triples, while also picking up two home runs. Hitting a league-best .438, the freshman’s bat was a consistent threat for opposing pitchers facing Buena Vista, maintaining a .513 on-base percentage and .708 slugging percentage. Taylor tied for second best in the league with 29 runs batted in (RBI), sat third in hits (42), and fourth in runs scored (27).
Eddie, in his 22
nd season at the helm of the Buena Vista University baseball team, is picking up his fourth-career Coach of the Year accolade. He is just one of two coaches in Beavers baseball history to be named Coach of the Year. Eddie guided the Beavers to an overall record of 27-14 and an 18-6 mark in league play, winning the A-R-C Regular Season title. The Beavers coach led the team to a .312 batting average overall, leading the A-R-C. Eddie’s staff is made up of
Steve Sonka – Pitching Coach and
Nate Hanner – Assistant Coach.
The All-American Rivers Conference first-team highlighted players from seven of the conference’s nine schools. The 16-member first-team saw eight individuals earn All-Conference accolades for at least the second time in their careers. This year’s team saw a balanced First-Team as seven A-R-C teams had at least one individual honored. Loras and Luther led the way with three honorees each.
Joining Taylor for the Beavers are two junior First-Team All-Conference selections, pitcher
