CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced that Nebraska Wesleyan University football player
Carter Terry (Grand Island, Neb./Northwest) and Wartburg College volleyball player
Katie Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) have been named American Rivers Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 5, 2021. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in men’s and women’s cross country, football, women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis, and volleyball.
Female Athlete of the Week – Volleyball – Defensive Player of the Week
Katie Foster, Wartburg College
Sr., Libero, Charles City, Iowa/Charles City
- Senior Katie Foster helped lead the Knights to a 4-0 week.
- The Wartburg libero tallied 84 digs and no defensive errors over the four matches.
- Additionally, she dealt three service aces.
- In Wartburg’s 3-2 win over Gustavus, the senior tallied 36 digs.
- Foster added 19 digs in the Knights’ 3-0 sweep of UW-River Falls.
- Wartburg also swept Carleton and Saint Mary’s University, with Foster tallying 16 and 13 digs respectively.
- Foster is a four-time All-Conference performer, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, 2019 Most Valuable Player, and 2017 Freshman of the Year.
- The Charles City, Iowa native is picking up her seventeenth Defensive Player of the Week honor in her Wartburg Career (9/5/21, 3/29/21, 2/22/21, 11/4/19, 10/21/19, 9/30/19, 9/23/19, 9/16/19, 9/9/19, 10/29/18, 10/15/18, 10/8/18, 9/2/18, 11/5/17, 10/29/17, 9/24/17, 9/3/17).
Male Athlete of the Week – Football – Offensive Player of the Week
Carter Terry, Nebraska Wesleyan University
Jr, QB, Grand Island, Neb./Northwest
- Terry led the Prairie Wolves to a 69-20 win over Eureka College.
- The Grand Island, Neb. native went 17-for-24 through the air, recording 393 passing yards, with seven touchdown passes.
- Terry’s seven touchdown passes ties the program record for the Prairie Wolves.
- The junior quarterback led a Prairie Wolf offense that churned out 551 yards of total offense and the most points since 1919.
- The is Terry’s first-career Offensive Player of the Week honor.
- NWU’s Jonathan Curti (9/23/2019) was the last Prairie Wolf to earn Offensive Player of the Week accolades.
Men’s Cross Country – Runner of the Week
Spencer Moon, Simpson College
Jr., Lake City, Iowa/South Central Calhoun
- Moon finished first out of 44 runners with a time of 19:07.4, 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher at the Bill Buxton Invite in Indianola, Iowa.
- His time trimmed 27 seconds off his previous best in a 6k.
- The junior helped Simpson claim a perfect score in the season-opening meet.
- This marks Moon’s first-career Runner of the Week honors.
- Spencer Moon is a 2020 All-Conference performer.
Women’s Cross Country – Runner of the Week
Megan Johnson, Central College
So., Parkersburg, Iowa/Aplington-Parkersburg
- Johnson finished first out of 43 runners with a time of 19:43.9, 3.2 seconds ahead of second place at the Central Dutch Invitational.
- Central won the title with 21 points.
- This is Johnson’s first-career Runner of the Week award.
- Central’s Miranda Kruiswyk was the last student-athlete to earn Runner of the Week honors for the Dutch women’s cross country team (9/9/18).
Football – Defensive Player of the Week
Karrell Simpson, Nebraska Wesleyan University
So., DB, Kansas City, Mo./Liberty
- In the opening game of the 2021 season, the Prairie Wolves collected a 69-20 win against Eureka College.
- Sophomore defensive back, Karrell Simpson led the Prairie Wolf defense that only surrendered 87 yards of rushing.
- The sophomore recorded two interceptions, including a 51-yard pick-six, and a forced fumble.
- Simpson registered three tackles in the win.
- The Kansas City, Mo. native is garnering his first-career Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Football – Special Teams Player of the Week
Ben Bryant, Wartburg College
So., RB, Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque
- Bryant was a vital part of regaining ground for the Knights on special teams and punt returns as they cruised to a 44-3 victory over Monmouth College.
- The Western Dubuque prep returned five punts for a total of 98 yards, with a long of 39 yards.
- Additionally, he returned one kickoff for 21 yards.
- This is Bryant’s first-career Special Teams Player of the Week award.
Women’s Golf – Golfer of the Week
Madison Clark, Central College
So., Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic
- Clark tied for 10th place at the William Penn Invitational finishing with an 81, only 4 shots behind first place.
- The Dutch finished 3rd of 10 teams with a score of 327.
- At the Luther Norse Classic, Clark finished 4th with a 78-76-154. She shot career best rounds in three-consecutive outings.
- Central finished 2nd of 12 teams at the Luther Norse Classic scoring a two-day total of 311-309-620.
- This marks the Bloomington, Ill. native’s first career Golfer of the Week honor.
Men’s Soccer – Defensive Player of the Week
Kyler Donovan, Loras College
Sr., D, Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb
- Donovan anchored a backline that held opponents to 18 shots on goal over three games.
- The Duhawks went 2-0-1 to start their 2021 season.
- Donovan also contributed offensively, recording two assists.
- He played 273 minutes over the three-match week.
- Loras played to a 4-4 draw against St. Norbert on September first and followed up with wins over UW-Eau Claire (2-1) and Concordia College, Minn. (3-0).
- This is Donovan’s first-career Defensive Player of the Week award.
- The Mount Horeb, Wis. Native was a 2020 (Spring 2021) A-R-C Honorable Mention honoree.
Men’s Soccer – Offensive Player of the Week
Jordy Triana-Vasquez, Simpson College
Jr., MF, Clive, Iowa/Valley
- Triana-Vasquez scored five goals and assisted two others during Simpson’s 2-0 record on the week.
- In the season opener against Augustana (Ill.), he buried four goals and assisted another to help the Storm earn a 6-1 victory.
- Over the two contests, the junior converted on five of his eight shots.
- In the Storm’s 2-1 OT win over Hamline, Triana-Vasquez recorded three points with one goal and one assist.
- The Clive, Iowa native notched 12 points in 154 minutes played.
- This is the second time Triana-Vasquez is earning Offensive Player of the Week award (10/14/19, 9/7/21).
- Triana-Vasquez is a 2020 (Spring 2021) All-Conference performer.
Women’s Soccer – Defensive Player of the Week
Kyndal Kells, Loras College
So., GK, Red Oak, Iowa/Red Oak
- Kells helped the Duhawks to a 3-0 week with a 2-0 win over St. Norbert College, 1-0 win over Dominican University, and 5-0 win over Concordia (Minn.).
- She combined for 10 saves over the three games, pitching shutouts in all three.
- She played all 90 minutes of all three games.
- The Red Oak, Iowa native is earning her first-career Defensive Player of the Week award.
Women’s Soccer – Offensive Player of the Week
Amanda Hiebert, Coe College
So., F, Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont
- Hiebert paced Coe with three goals in their 5-0 win over Ripon College on Sunday.
- The sophomore created multiple chances as she ended the match with six shots, including five on goal.
- The Sunnyvale, Calif. Native notched seven points in 60 minutes of action against Ripon.
- On the week she recorded 219 minutes played for the Kohawks.
- Hiebert is picking up her first-career Offensive Player of the Week honor in a Coe uniform.
- Coe’s Sydney Schroder was the last student-athlete to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors for the Kohawks (10/21/19).
Women’s Tennis – Player of the Week
Olivia Phillips, Wartburg College
Jr., Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock
- At the No. 1 slot, Phillips defeated Dubuque’s Alyssa Stevenson 6-3, 6-0 and St. Ambrose’s Kiersten Housenga 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
- Her record sits at 2-1 on the season.
- The duo of Phillips and Madison Overmann, also at the No. 1 spot, started the season with a 2-1 record.
- The duo defeated Dubuque’s Alyssa Stevenson/Patient Jabbah 8-7 and St. Ambrose’s, Kiersten Housenga/Maggie Sulliva, also by a score of 8-7.
- This is Phillips’ second career Player of the Week honor (9/5/20, 9/7/21).
- Olivia Phillips was a 2020 All-Conference Performer.
Volleyball – Offensive Player of the Week
Kylie Bildstein, Wartburg College
Sr., MH, Dyersville, Iowa/Beckman
- Wartburg middle hitter Kylie Bildstein helped lead the Knights to a 4-0 week, with three teams out of the MIAC.
- Wartburg defeated Gustavus (3-2), UW-River Falls (3-0), Carleton (3-0), and Saint Mary’s (3-0).
- The senior led the Knights with 44 kills and a .463 attacking percentage in 14 sets played.
- She also collected two service aces.
- The Dyersville, Iowa native is collecting her fourth-career Offensive Player of the Week award (9/5/21, 11/4/19, 10/21/19, 10/29/18).
- Bildstein is a three-time All-Conference Performer
