CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Day one of the 2021 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Baseball automatic qualifying tournament saw fourth-seeded Buena Vista advance in the winners bracket at the Cedar Rapids Pod, while the Waverly Pod's winners bracket was not completed due to weather.
Luther College, seeded second, and No.6-seed Simpson College will square off at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow to see who will advance to the Waverly, Iowa Pod championship game. Third-seeded Loras College awaits the loser of Luther and Simpson for an elimination game. The winner of the elimination game will advance to the Waverly Pod championship.
The Cedar Rapids Pod resumes with a 12:00 pm elimination game between top-seeded Coe and No.5-seed Dubuque. Buena Vista, seeded fourth, will face the winner of Coe and Dubuque in the Pod Championship at 2:00 p.m. Here are summaries of today's games:

Buena Vista scored four times in the first two innings and then held off a late charge from the University of Dubuque, winning 6-5 and advancing in the winners' bracket. The Beavers' first five runs came via big flies.
Jordan Matthewson hit a two-run homer in the first.
Logan Mueller then duplicated the feat in the second.
Zack Beekman's solo shot was part of a two-run fourth inning, and the Beavers were up six. An RBI single and an RBI walk in the sixth gave Dubuque some life, narrowing the gap to 6-2. The Spartans then mounted a big threat in the ninth, scoring three times on an error and two RBI singles. There were two on when BVU got out of the jam.
Patrick Rafferty was outstanding for Dubuque with a 3-for-4 day that included a run scored and an RBI.
Max Snowden was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

It was the
TJ Johnson show in Coe's 7-3 victory against Central. Johnson gave up just six hits and struck out nine as he recorded his 10th pitching win of the year against just one loss. He was also the Kohawks' best offensive player with a 3-for-5 day at the plate that included a triple, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Isaac Evans went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. He also walked once. Central's
Trevor Kimm had the game's only home run, a two-run shot that got the Dutch within two runs in the fourth inning. Kimm was the only Central player with a multi-hit game.

After trailing 1-0 through three innings, Dubuque tied things up in the bottom of the fourth and exploded for an 11-run fifth inning. The Spartans tacked two more on in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the score to 14-1. A late push by Central in the top of the seventh added three more runs, but the damage was already done as UD would earn the 10-run rule win after seven innings, 14-4. The Spartan's offense was led by
Jake Cekander who went 4-for-5 with three runs and one RBI.
Cole DeSefanis added two runs and two RBI while going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Max Snowden also batted over .500 in the game (2-for-3) while driving in two runs and scoring a run.
Colton Pfeifer recorded a two RBI performance and crossed home plate one time. Central's
Chris Hensley finished the game going 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run.
Trevor Kim added one RBI and one run for the Dutch while going 2-for-4. The Spartan's
Jordan Nelson earned the win, tossing 6.1 innings while allowing four runs on nine hits. Nelson struck out five of 27 batters.

In a pitchers duel that saw both go the distance,
Tyler Tennyson earned the victory for Buena Vista. Tennyson gave up six hits and no runs while striking out six of 29 batters. While the win went to the Beavers, Coe's
TJ Deardorff had a strong showing in his nine innings of work, striking out nine of 28 batters and giving up two runs on four hits. Buena Vista's four hits came from
Jordan Mathewson,
Caden Mathewson,
Tyler Stoltze, and
Easton Bahr. Barh's fifth inning one out single up the middle scored
Tyley McGregor and
Logan Mueller, which provided the offense BVU would need to prevail in the win. The Kohawks tallied six hits in the game but were unable to bring anyone home.
Tyler Elliott had a team-high two hits in three at bats, followed by five Coe players who recorded single hit games,
Riley LeGrand,
TJ Johnson,
Jacob Henry, and
Jared White.

Brady Held did it all for the Storm, scattering three hits over seven innings for the pitching victory and going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI at the plate. Held struck out nine and walked none. Simpson also played some long ball as

Chris Miller both homered. In addition to Held, two other players had three hits.
Noah Sacco was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI from the lead off spot.
Kolton Arnold was 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. For Loras,
Max Cullen was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Ryan Wohlers accounted for the Duhawks' first run with a homer.

Luther scored runs in the first five innings, and
Nick DuFoe pitched into the ninth to power the Norse to victory. DuFoe was charged with only three earned runs (five total) over 8.2 innings on the way to his sixth win of the year. He's lost only once this season.
Kelby Johnson was the hitting star for Luther. He was 4-for-4 with a homer, a triple, four RBIs, and three runs scored from the three hole. Lead off man
Cullen Stamp went 3-for-6 with a homer, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Wartburg's top-two hitters in the lineup --
Keaton Gray and
Parker Ridge -- had three hits each. Gray scored twice; one of Ridge's hits was a double.

Loras scored five runs in the first four innings, giving them a lead they would not surrender. Wartburg made a valiant attempt at a comeback down the stretch, but the Duhawks kept their offense rolling at the same time. Wartburg put their first run on the board in the top of the sixth and Loras answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Knights' four-run seventh put them within striking distance but Loras answered with two more in the bottom of the eighth and held Wartburg scoreless the final two frames. Loras' 9-5 win keeps them alive in the tournament while the elimination game loss for Wartburg brings their season to an end. The Duhawks saw four player record multi-hit games, paced by
Max Cullen who went 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs.
Daniel Rogers also went 2-for-5 and drove one run in.
Joe Egan scores two runs and finished the game 2-for-4. The Knights also had three players record a multi-hit game,
Zach Wesolowski (2-for-6),
Ben Dekruyf (2-for-5), and
Cael Boehmer (2-for-4). Dekruyf drove in three runs and scored one. The winning pitcher for the Duhawks,
Marshal Rice, went 6 innings while giving up just one run on six hits.
Ethan Peters earned his sixth save of the season in three innings of work. Peters allowed no runs and just one hit.
