Loras Women, Wartburg Men Take Outdoor Titles

5/15/2021 7:00:00 PM

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- One squad familiar with championships and one not so familiar took home team trophies at the 2021 American Rivers Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Wartburg men won their 11th conference title all-time and repeated their 2019 championship, while the Loras women won their fourth all-time but their first since 1999.

The Duhawk women have been one of the up-and-coming teams in the conference under the direction of head coach Matt Jones. Jones and the Loras staff were named the Coaching Staff of the Year by vote of the conference's coaches. While the outdoor conference title was 22 years in the making, Jones and his staff led Loras to an NCAA Division III Women's Track & Field Championships title in 2019.

Marcus Newsom, voted along with his coaches as the Staff of the Year on the men's side, continued to cement his legacy as one of Division III's coaching greats. His men are ranked No. 1 in the country headed into the NCAA meet in two weeks in Greensboro, North Carolina. Combined, Newsom has led Wartburg track and field to 33 outdoor championships (11 men, 22 women).

The individual athlete awards went to three different schools. Loras took both the Most Valuable Track and Most Valuable Field Performers. Elayna Bahl won both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles in times of 14.39 and 1:01.31, respectively. She also took fourth in the high jump (1.59 meters) and was on the third-place 4x400 relay team that recorded a time of 3:53.52. Teammate Grace Alley won the triple jump (11.50 meters) and was second in the high jump (1.65 meters) She also finished second in the heptathlon with a total of 4,238 points.

Wartburg's Dallas Wright and Derrick Smith were voted Most Valuable Track Performers. Wright was first in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles in times of 51.72 and 14.27, respectively. The latter time was a new all-time conference record and the former was a new meet record. He also helped Wartburg to relay gold in the 4x100 relay where the Knights sizzled at 41.13, a new meet record. Smith was also part of that 4x100 team and he added gold medals in both the 100 and 200 meters. Just a freshman, his winning time was 10.64 in the 100 and 21.52 in the 200.

The Most Valuable Field Performer went to the host school as Dubuque's Zachary Naatz continued the great tradition of Spartan throwers. Naatz was first in both the shot put and hammer throw, and he was fifth in the discus. His marks were 56.23 meters, 16.17 meters, and 45.13 meters.

  • Loras' 4x800 relay of Wyatt Kelly, Ryan HarveyChris Guise, and Mike Jasa set a new meet record with a time of 7:35.62.
  • Derrick Smith, Wartburg, set a new meet record in the 100 meters with a 10.58 in the prelims.
