IIAC NCAA Division III Championships Tracker

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA. – Fifty-one Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) student-athletes competed at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 24-26. Over three days of competition 19 Individual and four relays earned All-American distinction. Two individuals and one relay climbed to the top of the podium as national champions.

Saturday, May 26th Highlights
The final day of competition started with Central's Mark Fairley winning a national title in the 3,000m Steeplechase and the Nebraska Wesleyan women's 4x400m relay closed out the day with a national title performance. Fairley closed out his final race with a winning time of 9:04.50. The Prairie Wolf relay team of Anna Frazier, Elizabeth Jones, Aspen Rolfes, and Kaylee Jones ran to a championship time of 3:42.15. The title was NWU's third consecutive outdoor 4x400 relay national championship.

NWU's Elizabeth and Kaylee Jones placed third and fifth respectively in the 400m. Elizabeth ran a time of 54.761 while Kaylee crossed the line in 54.94. 

Also competing in the women's 4x400m relay was Wartburg. The team of Betsy Duehr, Belle Tyynismaa, Teylor Jones, and Aubree Taylor ran to a third-place finish in a time of 3:45.34. Prior to running on the 4x400 team, Duehr earned All-American honors in the 800m with a time of 2:11.04. Taylor also picked up All-American distinction prior to the 4x400. Taylor earned third-place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.47. The Knight's Ashlyn Bagge picked up her second All-American performance of the weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 5000m. Bagge ran a time of 17:09.37. In the men's 5000m, Wartburg's Sam Pinkowski placed seventh to claim All-American honors. Pinkowski finished in a time of 14:51.02. 

The Dubuque hammer throw duo of Tanasha Atwater and Rebecca Burmahl picked All-American honors, finishing sixth and seventh respectively. Atwater had a toss of 54.51m (178-10), while Burmahl's mark landed at 54.18m (177-09). 

Bella Solis of Loras became an All-American after finishing fifth in the 400m hurdles. The junior ran a time of 1:00.93. The Duhawks' Patrick Mikel once again broke the IIAC all-time 400m record with a time of 46.53 on his way to earning his first All-American honor of the weekend. The time earned Mikel a runner-up finish. Mikel took sixth in the 200m to pick up his second All-American distinction of the weekend. Mikel crossed the line in 21.71. 

The Men's 4x400m relay saw Loras and Wartburg earn All-American honors. Loras' team of Shamari Scott, Evan Gradoville, Tyson Morrison, and Mikel took sixth-place, crossing the line in 3:12.97. The Knights' team was made up of Levi Dolphin, Dillon DeMott, Famiek Cook, and Alex Teig. The four ran a time of 3:13.35 to earn eighth-place. 

The women's team standings finished with Wartburg tied for ninth with 24 points, Nebraska Wesleyan in 11th (20 points), Dubuque tied for 21st (11 points), and Loras tied for 53rd (4 points). 

Central and Dubuque were the highest finishing men's teams, tying for 12th with 16 points each. Loras tied for 15th-place with 14 points, Wartburg tied for 66th with three points, and Nebraska Wesleyan picked up one point to tie for 82nd. 

Friday, May 25th Highlights
Dubuque's Blaze Murfin was crowned national champion in the men's shot put after a winning toss of 18.62m (61-01.25). The All-American finish was Murfin's second of the championships, with the hammer throw left tomorrow. UD's Tanasha Atwater also claimed All-American honors with a 3rd-place finish in the women's shot put. Atwater had a mark of 14.50m (47-07.00).

Will Daniels of Central closed out his sophomore campaign with a 3rd-place finish in the decathlon to earn All-American distinction. Daniels compiled 6,793 points. 

In the men's 400-m prelims, Loras' Patrick Mikel took first in a time of 46.81 to qualify for tomorrow's final. The time also marks a new IIAC record, which was set by Mikel earlier this season.

Simpson's Dylan Kalinay qualified for the finals with an 8th-place finish in the 110m hurdle prelims. Kalinay crossed the line in a time of 14.81. 

The women's 400m saw Nebraska Wesleyan teammates and twin sisters Elizabeth and Kaylee Jones qualify for the finals. Elizabeth took 4th-place in the prelims with a time of 55.12 while Kaylee crossed the finish line in 55.29 to take 6th-place. 

After a three hour rain delay, Wartburg's Betsy Duehr ran an 800m prelim time of 2:10.18 and earned a spot in tomorrow's final. Duehr's time was the ninth fastest qualifying time. 

In the men's team race Dubuque has put up 16 points to stand in second-place. In tied for 18th-place is Central with six points and Nebraska Wesleyan is tied for 41st with one point. 

On the women's side Dubuque is tied for 20th in the team standings with six points. Wartburg sits tied for 23rd with five points.

Thursday, May 24th Highlights
Wartburg college teammates Ashlyn Bagge and Carina Collet claimed All-American honors in the 800-m. Bagge took 5th-place with a time of 36:13.62 and Collet earned 8th-place, crossing the finish line in 36:37.24. In the 400-m hurdles Loras' Bella Solis qualified for finals running a 1:00.68 3rd-place time in prelims. Also qualifying for the 400-m hurdle finals was Wartburg's Aubree Taylor. Taylor placed 9th in prelims, running a time of 1:01.25. The third women's performer to qualify for finals on day one was Ellie Beiermann of Nebraska Wesleyan. Beiermann took 9th-place in prelims of the 3,000-m steeplechase with a season-best time of 10:44.37. THe 4x400 relay teams of Nebraska Wesleyan and Wartburg qualified for the finals after placing 2nd and 5th, respectively in the prelims. NWU ran a time of 3:48.43 and Wartburg turned in a time of 3:48.37. 

In the women's team race Wartburg is tied for 9th with five points.

All-American performances on the men's side were earned by Trent Koehler of Nebraska Wesleyan and Blaze Murfin of Dubuque. Koehler took 8th-place in the long jump with a leap of 7.19m (23-07.25). In the discus Murfin had a season-best toss of 53.52m (175-07) to earn 3rd-place. After five scored events in the decathlon, Central College's Will Daniels has totaled 3,815 points to lead the field by 172 points. Two additional individuals and two relays advanced to finals on day one. Loras' Patrick Mikel ran a 22.066 in the 200m to take 6th in the prelims, while Central's Mark Fairley ran a 9:23.06 in the 3,000m steeplechase for 6th-place in prelims. The 4x400 relay teams of Loras and Wartburg both advanced to finals with 4th and 9th-place prelim finishes, respectively. The Duhawks ran a prelim time of 3:12:933, while the Knights crossed the line in 3:14.01. 

Dubuque stands tied for 8th-place in the men's team standings with six points. Nebraska Wesleyan is tied for 21st with one point. 

Tuesday, May 22nd Championship Preview
For each men’s individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student- athletes were accepted into the competition. For each women’s individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 16 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.

Of the 27 women's qualifiers, Nebraska Wesleyan leads the way with 10 competitors who will take to the track & field in nine individual events and one relay. Dubuque has nine qualifiers who will compete in five individual events and one relay. Wartburg will have six competitors, seven competing in individual events and one relay. Central and Loras each have one individual competing. In the most recent USTFCCCA national rankings, Nebraska Wesleyan earned the No.19 spot while Dubuque was ranked 24th.

This year's NCAA outdoor championships will feature seven returning All-Americans from a season ago, including three women who hold the title of National Champion. From Dubuque, Tanasha Atwater will look to defend her 2017 outdoor shot put title. Atwater enters the 2018 championships with the fourth-best mark in the nation at 14.77-m. Atwater will also compete in the hammer throw, where she holds the eighth best-mark going into the weekend. 

Elizabeth Jones and Kaylee Jones return for Nebraska Wesleyan after earning individual All-American honors in the 400-m a year ago. Elizabeth finished third, while Kaylee earned a sixth-place finish. Additionally, the junior Prairie Wolves have been members of the past two National Championship 4x400 relay teams and look to defend the title again this year as they enter with the second-fastest time in the nation at 3:45.45.

Ashlyn Bagge of Wartburg finished sixth and eighth in the 5000-m and 10,000-m in 2017 to claim All-American accolades. Bagge has once again qualified for this year's championships in both events. The Knights also earned All-American performances from Teylor Jones, Betsy Duehr, and Belle Tyynismaa a season ago. Jones was a member of the third-place 4x100 relay while Duehr and Tyynismaa were on the seventh-place 4x400 relay. The three will compete together on the 4x400 at this year's championships. Jones will compete individual in the 200-m and Duehr qualified in the 800-m. 

On the men's side, Dubuque and Wartburg will each see six student-athletes compete at this weekend's championships. Both schools have qualified four individual events and one relay. Loras qualified two individual events and one relay, with four student-athletes competing across all events. Simpson has two student-athletes competing in three individual events and Central qualified three individuals. Nebraska Wesleyan qualified two men for the long jump and Buena Vista will have one competitor in the discus. The latest USTFCCCA national rankings have Dubuque at No.13 and Central ranked 24th. 

Six men return to the 2018 Championships after garnering All-American distinction in 2017. Central's Mark Fairly finished as the 2017 national runner-up in the steeplechase and heads into this weekend's championships with the number one time in the nation at 8:57.39. 

Also owning a top time in the nation is Loras' Patrick Mikel. Mikel's top seeded time in the 400-m clocked in at 47.00. The time established a new IIAC all-time record. At last year's championships Mikel took fourth-place in the 400-m. Mikel and teammate Shamari Scott were members of last year's 4x400 relay team that earned eighth-place. The two will be members of the 4x400 relay team that qualified for this year's championships. 

University of Dubuque standout thrower Blaze Murfin took eighth in the shot put a season ago with a mark of 16.28-m. The junior thrower qualified this year with a mark of 17.30-m to earn the nation's number two seed. Murfin will also compete in the discus and hammer throw. 

Jordan Coughenour of Simpson earned a spot in this year's 400-m hurdle field with the nation's seventh-fastest time at 52.42. Coughenour was an All-American in the same event a year ago, crossing the finish line in 52.77 to take seventh-place.
