Coe's Staker Named AFCA and D3football.com Regional Coach of the Year

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College first year head coach Tyler Staker named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 5 and d3football.com All-West Region Coach of the Year.

Head coach Tyler Staker led the Kohawks to a school record 11 win season and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs. In Staker's first year at the helm Coe went from a 2015 record of 4-6 to 11-1 and Iowa Conference Champions in 2016. Coe's undefeated regular season marked the 11th unbeaten record in school history. The Kohawks averaged 37.6 points per game and 473.6 yards of total offense while holding opponents to an average of 20 points per game and 387.2 yards per game. In a season where the Kohawks would set a school record for turnovers in a game (nine against Monmouth, Ill.) they also controlled the turnover battle all season finishing with a +25 turnover margin. Tyler Staker is a 2006 graduate of Coe with a degree in business. He was a four-year letterman and a two-time captain — also twice an all-conference selection — for the Kohawks as a defensive back.
