The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced its major awards and all-conference team for the 2016 women’s soccer season. Loras College midfielder Elizabeth Mills (So., Brimfield, Ill.) has been selected as Iowa Conference Offensive MVP and Luther College senior defender Gabi Meirick (Sr., Pella, Iowa) has been named the Iowa Conference Defensive MVP.  The Luther College and Coe College staffs were voted the Co-Coaching Staffs of the Year. Luther College is headed by Russ Schouweiler and assisted by Molly Ford, Julie Shockey Trytten and James Garcia-Prats. Scott Myers heads up the Coe College team and is assisted by Matt Jenatscheck and Megan Konchar.

In Mills' sophomore campaign she was second in Iowa Conference scoring with 15 points on six goals and three assists. She also ranked second in Iowa Conference shots per game with a 4.63 average and 37 total. Mills tallied 16 points overall on six goals and four assists as the Duhawks head into the NCAA Division III tournament. After two seasons on the Duhawk squad, her career stats now stand at nine goals and nine assists. Mills scored the equalizing goal against Luther on October 25 to give Loras a share of the Iowa Conference regular-season title. She also was named to the Advantage Emblem Cup All-Tournament Team and was a 2015 All-Iowa Conference selection as a freshman. She is the fifth Duhawk to receive an Iowa Conference MVP award, joining Michelle Wieser (2004), Kate Young (2010), Kinsey Campbell (2012-13), and Katie Truesdale (2014-2015).

Meirick anchored the Luther backline that allowed fellow first team All-Conference honoree and goalkeeper Lauren Thormodsgard (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) to make the fewest saves in the conference. Meirick's efforts helped solidify the Norse defense that only allowed three goals against in conference play - with five shutouts - for a 0.35 goals-against average. Overall, Luther allowed 11 goals, which ranks second amongst IIAC schools, and posted a 0.65 goals-against average. Meirick and the Luther defense provided great security for Thormodsgard, as she needed to make only 40 saves in her 1492:40 minutes of play over 17 matches. The Norse defense held strong in the regular-season championship showdown against Loras, which ended in a 1-1 draw and, thus, a share of the Iowa Conference championship. Meirick is the sixth Norse player to receive an Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer MVP award, joining Nora Farrell (1996), Jen Shinbori (1998-99), Katie Pettigrew (2003-04), Erin Wilson (2014), and Erin Danielson (2015) .

The Luther College staff and Schouweiler guided the Norse to a 12-2-3 mark overall and the program’s fourth Iowa Conference regular season title with a 6-0-2 league mark. Luther is making its first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. The Norse earned the Iowa Conference automatic berth to the national tournament by winning the six-team Iowa Conference tournament. Luther defeated Wartburg College 1-0 in the tournament championship match on Saturday, November 5 in Decorah. The tournament title marked the second IIAC Tournament victory in school history - first in 1996. Paced by first team All-Iowa Conference selections Meirick, Melisse Chasse (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.), Ellie Bunz (Sr., Clive, Iowa), Thormodsgard, and Lauren Hughes (Sr., Oregon, Wis.), the Norse will take their momentum into the NCAA Championship first round match-up against Denison (10-5-4). This is Luther's second coaching award under Schouweiler's direction.

Myers and the Coe College staff led the Kohawks to a 11-7-2 overall record and a No. 5-seed in the Iowa Conference tournament with a 4-4 IIAC record. Coe ranks first overall in total points with 95 (34g, 27a) for a 4.75 average in points per game. Led by All-Iowa Conference selections Allison Stubbs (So., Ft. Collins, Colo.), Kelsey Fauser (Sr., New Castle, Colo.), Jordan Holmes (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa), and MJ Winterer (Jr., Omaha, Neb.), the Kohawks held strong against pre-season conference favorite Wartburg in the opening round of the Iowa Conference tournament but eventually fell short (4-3 penalty kicks). This marks the first Coaching Staff of the Year award for Coe College.

The IIAC also announced the 2016 Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team. The 26-member First and Second Teams include 18 repeat All-Conference performers. There were 16 additional selections voted Honorable Mention All-Conference, with one repeat honorable-mention performer. Luther led all schools with seven All-Conference selections. The Norse had an IIAC-high five on the first team and two on the second team. Loras had six honorees, followed by Central with five and Wartburg with four. Coe placed three on the All-Conference team and Dubuque secured one award winner. Luther's Bunz and Chasse received all-league honors for the fourth time, increasing the number of four-time all-conference honorees to 31. Coe's Fauser and Holmes, and Dubuque forward Kyleigh McLaughlin (Jr., E. Moline, Ill.) each earned their third honor. Central College goalkeeper Sydney Lunardi (Sr., Bettendorf, Iowa) wrapped up her career with three All-Conference honors and a 2016 honorable mention.
