CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced its major awards and all-conference team for the 2015 women’s soccer season. Loras College senior forward
Katie Truesdale (Tinley Park, Ill. / Victor J. Andrew) has repeated as Iowa Conference Offensive MVP and Luther College junior defender
Erin Danielson (Iowa City, Iowa / Iowa City) has been named the Iowa Conference Defensive MVP, while Wartburg College head coach
Tiffany Pins was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year.
Truesdale led the Iowa Conference in scoring for the second straight year with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Her seven goals were nearly twice as many as any other Iowa Conference player in league play. Truesdale finished with 36 points overall on 16 goals and four assists to rank sixth on Loras’ single-season lists for points and seventh in goals. Truesdale concludes her career second all-time at Loras with 58 goals, tied for second with 134 career points and eighth all-time with 18 assists. She netted multiple goals in a game five times this season, including a hat trick against Benedictine (Ill.) on September 13. Truesdale also collected the game-winning goal in Loras’ 4-2 win over Dubuque in the regular season finale. She is the fourth Duhawk to receive an Iowa Conference MVP award, joining Michelle Wieser (2004), Kate Young (2010) and Kinsey Campbell (2012-13) and the sixth player to earn multiple women’s soccer MVP awards.
Danielson completed her first season playing for the Norse after participating in cross country the past two seasons. She started all 19 matches, helping to solidify a back line that allowed just seven goals in league play - with three shutouts - for an 0.97 goals-against average. Overall, Luther allowed 16 goals, tied with Wartburg for second-least among IIAC schools, and posted an 0.83 goals-against average. Luther goalkeeper Lauren Thormodsgard benefited greatly from having Danielson on defense, needing to make only 40 saves in over 1,700 minutes of play over 19 games. The Norse posted seven shutouts overall. Danielson is the fifth Norse player to receive an Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer MVP award, joining Nora Farrell (1996), Jen Shinbori (1998-99), Katie Pettigrew (2003-04) and Erin Wilson (2014).
Pins, in her fifth season leading her alma mater, has guided the Knights to a 14-4-2 mark overall and the program’s third Iowa Conference title with a 6-1-0 league mark. On Saturday, Wartburg won its second Iowa Conference tournament title and the IIAC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship, prevailing 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout over Loras. Led by the play of first-team all-IIAC goalkeeper
Beth Crow and all-IIAC defender
Lisa Trizzino, the Knights have posted eight shutouts and take an eight-match unbeaten streak (7-0-1) into an NCAA Championship first round match with St. Scholastica. Pins has compiled a 61-28-13 mark in five seasons. This is Pins’ first IIAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year honor.
The IIAC also announced the 2015 Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team. The 27-member Team (there was a tie on the second team) includes 12 repeat All-Conference performers. Luther and Wartburg led all schools with six all-conference selections. The Knights had an IIAC-high five on the first team and one on the second team, while the Norse placed three on each team. Dubuque and Loras had four honorees each, while Coe and Central had three apiece and Simpson had one. Truesdale and Trizzino received all-league honors for the fourth time, increasing the number of four-time all-conference honorees to 29. Luther junior forwards
Ellie Bunz and
Melisse Chasse, Central junior goalkeeper
Sydney Lunardi and Wartburg senior midfielder
Brittany Frush each earned their third honor.
