Central's Greenfield Headlines All-Iowa Conference Men's Basketball Team

Buena Vista's Wuebker Named Defensive Player of the Year; Central's Douma Named Top Coach

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- Central College senior forward Matt Greenfield (Huxley, Iowa / Ballard) has been selected as the 2013-2014 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Men's Basketball Most Valuable Player, headlining the 15-member All-Iowa Conference Team. Greenfield earned his first all-conference honor after receiving honorable mention last season.

In addition, Buena Vista sophomore center Nick Wuebker (Ayrshire, Iowa / Emmetsburg) was selected as the league’s defensive player of the year and Central College mentor Craig Douma was tapped as the league’s top coach.

IIAC Most Valuable Player – Matt Greenfield, Central College, Huxley, Iowa / Ballard
Greenfield has averaged 19.0 points and 9.9 rebounds and 1.22 blocks in 27 contests heading into the NCAA Tournament, leading Central in scoring 14 times and rebounding 22 times while posting 13 double-doubles. He currently leads all Iowa Conference players in both scoring and rebounding and ranks third in blocked shots. Greenfield reached the 30-point plateau twice this season, scoring a league season-high 35 points at Buena Vista on Jan. 25 and 30 at Dubuque on Feb. 15. He also pulled down an IIAC season-high-tying 17 rebounds Dec. 29 at Sacred Heart (P.R.) and blocked an IIAC season-high six shots against Buena Vista on Feb. 12. Greenfield ranks 10th in Division III in defensive rebounds per game (8.04), 21st in total field goals attempted (414), 26th in double-doubles (13) and 30th in total rebounds (266) through games played March 2.

Greenfield became the 27th member of Central's 1,000-point club by banking in a 30-foot shot as the halftime buzzer sounded in Saturday's conference tournament championship game. He has netted 513 points this season after scoring 496 points combined over his first three campaigns. Greenfield is also ninth on the all-time rebounding leaderboard with 596 career boards. He is third in blocked shots with 93 as well. Greenfield’s 513 points this season rank sixth all-time, while his 266 rebounds rank third and 33 blocked shots eighth.

In 14 Conference games, Greenfield averaged a league-leading 20.2 points and 10.4 rebounds and ranked second in blocked shots at 1.29 per game. He also ranked ninth in free-throw percentage at 81.3 percent (61-of-75). Greenfield is the sixth Central player to be named IIAC Most Valuable Player, accounting for seven honors.

IIAC Defensive Player of the Year – Nick Wuebker, Buena Vista University, Ayrshire, Iowa / Emmetsburg
Wuebker is the first non-Luther player to win the award. He averaged 9.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 0.78 blocked shots per game, ranking fourth among league players in rebounding, fifth in blocks and 22nd in scoring. Wuebker, who had eight double-doubles this season, also shot a league-best and school-record 68.1 percent (111-of-163) from the field. In league play, Wuebker averaged 9.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, 0.57 blocks while shooting a league-record 71.4 percent (55-of-77) from the field.

IIAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year – Craig Douma, Central College
Central College head coach Craig Douma is the 2013-2014 Iowa Conference Coach of the Year. Douma, in just his second year, led Central to an 11-3 Conference mark and the program’s second title in five years. The Dutch defeated fourth-seeded Buena Vista, 86-84, and sixth-seeded Luther, 74-70, to win the Iowa Conference men’s basketball tournament for the second time and advance to the NCAA Tournament with a 20-7 mark.

In conference games, Central, which sported the league’s fourth-best scoring offense at 77.3 points per game, led the IIAC in only blocked shots (3.07 bpg) but ranked second in free throw percentage (77.0 percent), 3-point field goal percentage (37.5 percent), rebounding (39.3 rpg), and rebounding margin (+8.1) and third in scoring defense (73.4 ppg), scoring margin (+3.9 ppg), field-goal percentage (44.6 percent), and 3-pointers made (8.0 per game).

This is the first time Douma has been named IIAC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year and the seventh honor for a Central men’s basketball coach (Jack Walvoord, 1977-78-80-85-91; Mike Boschee, 2010).

All-Iowa Conference Men’s Basketball Team
The IIAC also released the 2013-2014 All-Iowa Conference Men’s Basketball Team. The 15-member Team includes seven repeat All-Conference performers including Luther’s John Androus, a two-time All-IIAC pick (also 2012 Second Team), but does have last year's Defensive Player of the Year honor sandwiched in-between. Buena Vista’s Cole Darrow, Dubuque’s Andre Norris and Wartburg’s Eddie Diemer all made the jump to the first team after being named second-teamers a year ago, while Androus and Coe’s Andrew Wirth earned first-team honors this season after being named second-team picks in 2012. Loras’ Nathaniel Smith earned a spot on the All-Iowa Conference Second Team for the second straight year, while Dubuque’s Chris Frazier, a first-teamer a year ago, joined Smith on the second team. Greenfield, Wirth and second-teamer Charles Swain of Simpson earned all-conference this season after receiving honorable mention last season.

In addition to his two all-conference honors, Frazier was also an honorable mention in 2012. Each IIAC school had at least one all-conference player, led by Dubuque and Loras with three apiece. Conference champion Central, Buena Vista and Luther all had two selections and Coe, Simpson and Wartburg had one each.
