CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The 2013 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Soccer Tournaments kicked off Saturday, Nov. 2, with all four higher seeded teams advancing to the semifinal round.
The men's and women's squads from Dubuque and Simpson met in rematches of the Oct. 29 regular-season finales, but the four days in between did little to change the result as the Dubuque women prevailed in Dubuque and the Simpson men emerged victorious in Indianola.
Men
No. 4 Simpson def. No. 5 Dubuque, 2-1 [ Box Score ]
At Indianola, Simpson survived a physical matchup with Dubuque that featured 11 yellow cards. The Storm (12-6-2) converted a pair of penalty kicks - the first by Mitchell White in the 34th minute, the second by Tyler Neumann in the 77th minute. For Neumann, it was his third goal against the Spartans in the span of five days. Daniel Morris scored off an Alassane Doukoure corner kick in the 86th minute to chip into the lead, but it would be the only goal allowed by Storm keeper Luke Aronow. The Storm outshot the Spartans, 22-10, and held an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks in the contest. Dubuque closed its season at 6-11-1 overall.
No. 3 Luther def. No. 6 Central, 1-0 [ Box Score ]
At Decorah, Luther's Martin Stalberger netted his second game-winning goal of the week, heading in a ball off an assist from Logan Martell in the 23rd minute. Tommy Breen made five saves and recorded the shutout for the Norse (14-5-0). Tim Maggard matched Breen's five saves in goal for Central (9-9-1), but allowed the lone goal.
Women
No. 4 Wartburg def. No. 5 Central, 1-0 (OT) [ Box Score ]
At Waverly, Wartburg held a commanding 24-4 shot advantage in regulation but could not find a way to get a shot past Dutch netminder Sydney Lunardi, who had entered the game with 7.5 shutouts. The Knights (8-10-1) finally burst through in the 93rd minute as Taylor Woods found the lower right corner of the goal on a rebound off an assist from Brittany Frush. Sophie Perez made four saves in net for the Knights. Central bowed out with a 12-6-2 record.
No. 3 Dubuque def. No. 6 Simpson, 3-0 [ Box Score ]
At Dubuque, the Spartans (15-4-0) dominated in terms of shots (26-6) and and corner kicks (10-1) and took an early lead on a Kelsey Graefen redirect in the 8th minute. Alexandra Watkins increased the lead to to 2-0 with a goal just before halftime and Liz Frazier provided the capper in the 73rd minute. Watkins finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Frazier provided an assist on the Watkins goal in addition to her on score. The Storm (4-16-1) were held to six shots overall and just two on goal.
Semifinals Set for Wednesday, Nov. 6
Loras, which holds the top seed in both the men's and women's tournaments, will host a semifinal doubleheader Wednesday, Nov. 6. The women will host Wartburg at 5 p.m., followed by the men hosting Simpson at 7:30 p.m.
The Wartburg men will host Luther in the other men's semifinal at 7 p.m. in Waverly, while the Luther women entertain Dubuque in the other women's semifinal in Dubuque, also at 7 p.m.
Wednesday's winners advance to Saturday's championship games. Those contests will be hosted by the highest remaining seed in each tournament. The IIAC Soccer Tournament champions will earn the Iowa Conference's automatic berths into the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Soccer Championships. Loras is the defending champion of both tournaments.
