CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced its major awards and all-conference team for the 2013 women’s soccer season. Loras College senior defender
Kinsey Campbell (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) has been named Iowa Conference Defensive MVP and Central College senior forward
Alayna Bailey (Des Moines, Iowa / Hoover) has been named the Iowa Conference Offensive MVP, while University of Dubuque head coach
Jason Berna and Luther College head coach
Russ Schouweiler will share 2013 IIAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year honors.
Campbell, who last year shared what was then a single IIAC Most Valuable Player honor with Wartburg’s Cathy Reiter, was a key cog to a Loras defense that allowed only five goals to IIAC competition (regular season and tournament) and only 24 overall in 23 games. The Duhawks have held their opponents to 7.9 shots on goal while posting a 1.02 goals-against average. The GAA ranks third among IIAC schools, as do the 24 goals. She played in 22 of Loras’ 23 games with 21 starts, recording three assists. Campbell is the third Duhawk to be named Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer MVP (Michelle Wieser, 2004; Kate Young, 2010) and the fifth overall to earn multiple honors.
Bailey led all Iowa Conference players with 41 points, 19 goals and five game-winning goals, as the Dutch posted a 12-6-2 mark overall and a 3-3-1 finish in the Iowa Conference. Her seven goals in league play tied Danielle Vujovic for the league lead, while her 15 points were second only to Vujovic’s 21. Bailey also scored the game-winning goal in each of Central’s three league wins, tying Dubuque’s
Alexandra Watkins as the league leader. Her 19 goals and 41 points this season, 47 career goals and 101 career points all rank second (or tied for second) on Central’s all-time lists. Bailey is the first Central player to be named IIAC Women’s Soccer MVP.
Berna, in his 13th season as head coach at Dubuque, guided the Spartans to a 16-5-0 record, a 5-2 mark in the Iowa Conference for a tie for second-place honors and a runner-up placing in the IIAC Tournament. The Spartans led all IIAC schools in fewest goals allowed (18) and goals-against average (0.85) and ranked third in points (6.52 per game), goals (2.14 per game) and shutouts (8). Berna, who started the Dubuque women’s program in 2001, also won IIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2005, 2009 and 2012.
Schouweiler, in his fourth season at Luther, guided the Norse to a 9-9-0 mark overall and a tie for second in the Iowa Conference with a 5-2 league mark. Luther qualified for the IIAC Tournament for the fourth time under his direction, falling to Berna’s Dubuque squad in the IIAC Tournament semifinals. Schouweiler has compiled a 36-36-3 mark in his four years. This is Schouweiler’s first Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year honor.
The IIAC also announced the 2013 Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team. The 27-member Team (there was a tie on the second team) includes 10 repeat All-Conference performers. All eight institutions garnered at least one All-IIAC honor in 2013. Iowa Conference runners-up Dubuque and Luther led all schools with six all-conference selections each with three players apiece on the first and second teams. Loras and Wartburg followed with five picks each with the Duhawks placing a league-high four players on the first team. Central had a pair of all-IIAC selections – both first teamers – and Buena Vista, Coe and Simpson each had a player named to the second team. Dubuque senior forward Alexandra Watkins received first-team all-league honors for the fourth time, increasing the number of four-time all-IIAC honorees to 26. Campbell, Bailey and Luther junior midfielder
Elly Arend each earned their third honor with Campbell making her third straight All-IIAC first team.
