2012 Iowa Conference Women's Soccer Awards Announced

Loras' Campbell, Wartburg's Reiter Share MVP Honors; Three Split Coach of the Year Honors

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras College junior defender Kinsey Campbell (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) and Wartburg College senior midfielder Cathy Reiter (Buckingham, Iowa / Union Community) have been named co-recipients of the 2012 IIAC Women’s Soccer Most Valuable Player Award. Central College head coach Mike Kobylinski, University of Dubuque head coach Jason Berna and Loras College head coach Dan Rothert will share 2012 IIAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year honors.

Campbell was a key cog to a Loras defense that allowed only four goals to IIAC competition (regular season and tournament) and only 24 overall in 22 games through the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship. The Duhawks have held their opponents to an average of 8.82 shots on goal while posting a 1.06 goals-against average en route to an 18-4 record. The GAA ranks third among IIAC schools. She has started all 22 games, accounting for three points on a goal in a game at Luther and an assist in a home game against Wisconsin-Whitewater. Campbell is the third Duhawk to be named Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer MVP (Michelle Wieser, 2004; Kate Young, 2010).

Reiter led the Knights to a 12-4-3 mark, a runner-up finish in the Iowa Conference with a 6-1-0 mark and a berth in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. Her 29 points rank second on the team to Kaylee Benning as do her 11 goals. She did, however, post team-highs with seven assists and four game-winning goals. In seven league games, she totaled 14 points on five goals and a team-high four assists. She ranks fifth among league players in total shots (64) and fourth in shots per game (3.37). Reiter is the third Wartburg player to be named Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer MVP (Rachel Oswald, 2007-08; Katy Wendt, 2011).

Kobylinski, in his second season at Central, guided the Dutch to a 12-6-2 mark overall, setting a school record for victories. Central finished fourth in the conference with a 3-2-2 record and qualified for the IIAC Tournament for the second year in a row, advancing to the semifinal round before falling to Loras. After inheriting a squad that had six wins in the three seasons prior to his arrival, Kobylinski has compiled a 22-13-3 mark. This is Kobylinski’s first Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year honor.

Berna, in his 12th season as head coach at Dubuque, guided the Spartans to an 11-7-2 overall record, a 4-2-1 mark in the Iowa Conference for a third-place league finish and a runner-up placing in the IIAC Tournament. The Spartans tied Wartburg, Central and Loras with seven shutouts during the season, including three in league play that led to a 1.38 goals-against average. Berna, who started the Dubuque women’s program in 2001, also won IIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and 2009.

Rothert, in his 15th season, guided the Duhawks to a 18-4 overall record, an eighth IIAC regular-season title, a 10th Iowa Conference women’s soccer tournament title and a berth in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. The Duhawks outscored their league opponents 20-3 en route to a perfect 7-0-0 mark in IIAC play, posting four shutouts and an 0.43 goals-against average. In 22 games, Loras outscored its opponents by a 59-24 margin with eight shutouts and a 1.06 goals-against average. This is Rothert’s seventh Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year award, previously being honored in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011.

The IIAC also announced the 2012 Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team. The 26-member Team includes 15 repeat All-Conference performers. All eight institutions garnered at least one All-IIAC honor in 2012. Iowa Conference runner-up Wartburg leads all schools with seven all-conference selections, has only three first-teamers. Conference champion Loras was next with four all-league picks, but had an IIAC-high four named to the first team. Dubuque and Luther had three selections each, followed by Buena Vista, Central and Simpson with two apiece, while Coe picked up the remaining all-conference honor.

Loras senior midfielder Jayne Eslinger received all-league honors for the fourth time, increasing the number of four-time all-IIAC honorees to 25. Wartburg junior midfielder Anna Aquino, Dubuque junior midfielder Alexandra Watkins and Coe senior midfielder Jenny Snook each earned their third honor with Aquino making her third straight All-IIAC first team.
