CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its major football awards and All-Conference team for the 2012 season. University of Dubuque senior quarterback
Wyatt Hanus (Traer, Iowa / North Tama) has been named the 2012 IIAC Football Offensive Most Valuable Player, while Coe College senior defensive end
Frank Weymiller (New Albin, Iowa / Waukon) has been named the 2012 IIAC Football Defensive Most Valuable Player. Coe College head coach
Steve Staker has been named the 2012 IIAC Football Coach of the Year.
2012 Offensive Most Valuable Player – Wyatt Hanus, QB, University of Dubuque
The Iowa Conference’s leading passer in terms of average, Hanus completed 258 of 390 passes for 3,165 yards and a league-high 27 touchdowns while directing Dubuque’s league-leading passing offense. He also ranked second in the IIAC to Simpson’s Taylor Nelson in total offense (314.5) and to Coe's Jared McNutt in pass efficiency (153.6). Hanus topped 300 yards passing in six games, topping out at 412 yards against Central on Sept. 29. He ranks 16th in NCAA Division III in total offense and 29th in pass efficiency.
Hanus, a two-time first team all-league signal-caller, ranks fifth among Division III quarterbacks in passing yards, ninth in passing yards per game and 10th in completions per game. He concludes his career at Dubuque as the school’s career leader in passing yards (8,394), completions (670) and touchdowns (82) while ranking second in passing attempts (989). Hanus holds the top two single-season UD totals in passing yards, completions and touchdowns and holds two of the top four totals in attempts and total offense.
In addition to owning seven of the top 20 single-game passing yardage totals, he holds UD’s single-game marks for touchdowns (7 vs. Buena Vista, 2011) and completions (37 vs. Central, 2012). The seven touchdown passes against Buena Vista are an Iowa Conference record, as were the 35 scoring strikes in league play in 2011. Hanus figured prominently in a third IIAC record as 21 of his 37 completions at Central in 2012 went to Austin Morgan, setting a new single-game league mark for receptions.
Hanus is the second Dubuque player in a row to be named the league’s top offensive player after 2011 Gagliardi Trophy winner
Michael Zweifel, and just the third Dubuque player to be named an Iowa Conference MVP, joining Zweifel and
Rick Steil, who captured the award in 1979.
2012 Defensive Most Valuable Player – Frank Weymiller, DE, Coe College
Weymiller, now a three-time First Team All-Iowa Conference selection, has made 65 tackles (44 solo) through 10 games this season, ranking 16th among Iowa Conference defensive players while leading a Coe defense that ranks second in both rushing offense (98.7 ypg) and pass defense (187.6 ypg) but leads the league in total defense (286.3 ypg). He leads all league players with 11.0 sacks (10 solo) and ranks second with 18.5 tackles for loss despite sitting out portions of the second half in some games due to Coe having built a significant lead.
With 36.5 career sacks, Weymiller is currently tied with Oberlin’s Clay Eaton for the lead among active Division III players. The mark ranks as the 12th-most in NCAA Division III history. He also owns the top three single-season sack totals in Kohawk history with his 11.0 this season ranking second behind the 15.5 he posted as a freshman in 2009 and just ahead of the 10 he had in 2010. Weymiller is also Coe’s career leader in tackles for loss with 57.5; his 18.5 TFLs this season ranking third all-time for a single season.
Additionally, Weymiller has been credited with six forced fumbles this season, twice as many as anyone else in the Iowa Conference. His 15 career forced fumbles are the most by any active player at any level of the NCAA.
Weymiller becomes the fourth different Coe player – and the first one from the defensive side of the ball – to be named an Iowa Conference MVP, representing six total honors. The others are current Buffalo Bills running back
Fred Jackson (2001 & 2002),
Joe Brannen (2004), and
Brad Boyle (2009 overall & 2010 offense). Brannen and Boyle were quarterbacks.
2012 Iowa Conference Football Coach of the Year – Steve Staker, Coe College
Staker led the Kohawks to a 10-0 mark overall, the school’s first outright Iowa Conference title – and fourth overall – and a berth in the 2012 NCAA Division III Football Championship. Under his guidance this year, Coe ranks among the top-three in the Conference in 22 statistical areas including leading the IIAC in scoring offense (44.6 ppg), scoring defense (11.3), total offense (463.4 ypg), total defense (286.3), rushing offense (202.9 ypg), pass efficiency (178.4), pass defense efficiency (108.8), opponents first downs (14.7 per game), third-down conversion percentage (48-of-95; 50.5 percent), opponents’ third-down conversion percentage (26-of-103; 25.2 percent), turnover margin (+1.57 per game), red zone offense (38 scores on 43 opportunities; 88.4 percent) and red zone defense (5 scores on 12 opportunities; 41.7 percent).
So potent was Coe’s defense in league play this year that they allowed, on average, 10.8 fewer points and 45.4 yards of total offense than the next best team in the league during IIAC play. They also ranked second to Dubuque’s league-leading pass defense by only 4.3 yards (183.3-187.6). Opponents also converted 10 percent fewer opportunities against the Kohawks than against runner-up Wartburg (35.3 percent)
This is the second Iowa Conference Football Coach of the Year honor for Staker, who in his fifth season directing the Kohawk program. He also won the award in 2009 and is one of two Coe head coaches to have won the award (
Erik Raeburn, 2002).
2012 All-Iowa Conference Football Team
The IIAC also announced today the 2012 All-Conference Football Team. The 55-member Team includes 20 repeat All-Conference honorees, including seven – Weymiller, Coe running back
Brendan Leiran, Coe offensive lineman
Jacob Deaton, Wartburg offensive lineman
Jon Orr, Wartburg running back
Reese Thompson, Wartburg defensive back
Garrett McGrane and Dubuque linebacker Trevor Runkle – who become three-time All-Conference performers. Each of the honors earned by Weymiller, Leiran and McGrane were first team honors. Also, Simpson junior
Brad Vogel captured a pair of all-conference honors from the coaches. He was named to the first team as a return specialist and to the second team at receiver, his regular position. This is Vogel’s first all-league honor as a receiver. He was an honorable mention in 2010 and a first-teamer in 2011 as a return specialist.
Conference champion Coe had a league-best 15 players selected All-Iowa Conference – eight on the first team, seven on the second team. Coe’s selections were also evenly distributed on either side of the ball. There were seven on offense, seven on defense and a kicker. Simpson College followed with nine selections, just ahead of University of Dubuque and Wartburg College with eight apiece. Buena Vista University received six all-conference nods, followed by Central College with five and Loras College and Luther College with two each. Simpson and Wartburg each had five first-team selections while Dubuque had four.
