PELLA, Iowa --- The combination of chilly temperatures, high winds and an already challenging layout at Bos Landed Golf Club sent scores soaring Friday in the third round of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women's Golf Championship.

With a 79, Central's Ashley Smith was the only player in the 40-person field that broke 80. That left her in seventh place at 244 heading into the final 18 holes.

Simpson's Jennifer Gaffney regained the medalist lead after firing a third-round 84. With a 238 total (72-82-84), she leads a tight pack at the top where only four strokes separate the top five golfers. Wartburg's Samanatha Heinen (79-75-85--239) is one stroke back, followed by Central's Kelsey Van Tasell (77-80-83--240) in third and Wartburg's Taylor Roberts (77-79-85--241) in fourth. Wartburg's Kelsi Sawatzky and Loras' Abby Potts, the co-leaders at the midway point of the championship, each struggled Friday. Sawatzky fired a 90 and is tied for fifth at 242 with Luther's Katie Gaudian (81-76-85--242). Potts (75-77-94) sits ninth at 246, 10 strokes back.

Wartburg (307-312-347--966) fired a 347 team total and leads Luther (317-318-374--1009) by 43 strokes. Central (332-331-371--1034) leads Simpson (328-347-364--1039) and Loras (334-331-375--1040) in a tight race for third place.

The championship concludes Saturday with a final 18 holes at Bos Landen. Players from Coe and Buena Vista will tee off in the first wave, followed by golfers from Simpson, Loras and Dubuque. Players from wartburg, Luther and Central will make up the final wave. Players will be ordered within their team by their 54-hole score.
