Wartburg's Wendt Named MVP; Loras' Rothert Named Coach of the Year

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College senior forward Katy Wendt (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) has been named the 2011 IIAC Women’s Soccer Most Valuable Player and Loras head coach Dan Rothert has been named the 2011 IIAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year.

Wendt led the Knights to a share of their second Iowa Conference title and spot in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship. She led all league players with 13 assists, averaging 0.65 per game to rank 14th in NCAA Division III (through Nov. 13). Wendt also ranked fourth among IIAC players in points (29) and tied for tenth in goals (8). In eight IIAC games, she scored six goals and five assists to tie for the league lead in points (17) and assists while ranking second in goals scored. Wendt is the second Wartburg player to be named Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer MVP (Rachel Oswald, 2007-08).

Rothert, in his 14th season, guided the Duhawks to an 18-3-1 overall record and a share of their seventh IIAC title with a 7-0-1 mark in league play and advanced to the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. The Duhawks outscored their league opponents by a 35-3 margin, posting five shutouts and an 0.36 goals-against average. In 22 games, Loras outscored its opponents by a 72-17 margin with 12 shutouts and an 0.55 goals-against average. The Duhawks averaged 3.23 goals per game to rank 19th in NCAA Division III (through games of Nov. 13) and averaged a league-high 2.64 assists per game. This is Rothert’s sixth Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year award, previously being honored in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2010.

The IIAC also announced the 2011 Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team. The 26-member Team includes 15 repeat All-Conference performers. Iowa Conference co-champions Loras (six) and Wartburg (seven) combined to account for 13 selections, including four each on the first team. Dubuque, Luther, and Simpson had three all-IIAC selections each with the Spartans and Norse placing two each on the first team. Central landed two individuals on the second team with Buena Vista and Coe splitting the two remaining all-conference honors.

Wendt, Luther forward Dani Meirick, Simpson midfielder Nicole Dillenburg and Wartburg forward Chelsea Frye each received all-league honors for the fourth time, increasing the number of four-time all-IIAC honorees to 24. Additionally, Wendt, Meirick, and Dillenburg were all named to the first team for the fourth time, increasing the number of four-time first team all-IIAC picks to nine. Loras’ Jayne Eslinger, Jessica Kern, and Kate Young, Dubuque’s Madeline Mobile, and Wartburg’s Mackenzie Moore each earned their third honor with Kern and Young making their third straight All-IIAC first team.
