Buena Vista's Christensen and Wartburg's Sathoff Named IIAC Athletes of the Week

Performers of the Week Named in Four Sports

 

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Buena Vista University women's basketball player Jess Christensen (Turin, Iowa/West Monona) and Wartburg College men's basketball player Jordan Sathoff (Packwood, Iowa/Pekin) have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 21, 2010. The Conference also announced performers of the week in the sports of wrestling and women's swimming and diving.

Women's Basketball — Jess Christensen, Buena Vista University, Turin, Iowa / West Monona
Christensen, a junior forward, averaged 19.7 points and 10 rebounds as the Beavers opened the season with a 2-1 mark. A transfer, Christensen opened her Buena Vista career with 22 points and seven rebounds in a season-opening loss to Nebraska Wesleyan. In her second game, she posted a 17-point, 17-rebound double-double in a win over Bethany Lutheran, tying a BVU single-game school record for rebounds. Through Nov. 21, Christensen leads all IIAC players in rebounding and sits second in scoring. (IIAC Female Athlete of the Week)

Men's Basketball — Jordan Sathoff, Wartburg College, Packwood, Iowa / Pekin
Sathoff, a junior forward, averaged 20.7 points and 9.0 rebounds while leading the Knights to a 3-0 record to open the year for the first time since the 2002-03 season. He posted his third career double-double with a 19-point, 10-rebound performance in the championship game of the Buzz Levick-Pizza Ranch Tipoff Tournament and was named tournament MVP. Women's Swimming & Diving — Gabrielle Gaulke, Loras College, Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic
Gaulke, a sophomore, won the 200 freestyle (2:11.7) and 100 butterfly (1:08.4) in an 84-54 Iowa Conference dual victory over Simpson. She also placed second in the 1,000 freestyle (11:49.53) and 200 butterfly (2:31.6) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:54.9) in a 134-98 nonconference loss to Grinnell. In the 1,000 freestyle, she was edged at the wall by 0.53 seconds by Grinnell's Jenna Beeler.

Wrestling — Erik Hanson, Loras College, Lansing, Ill. / Thornton Fractional South
Hanson, a senior 157-pounder, won his weight class at the Concordia Open on November 20. Seeded eighth, Hanson defeated top-seeded Ben Strobel of Wis.-Stevens Point 10-4 in the quarterfinals and fifth-seeded Virgil Pope of MSOE, 6-4, in the semifinals before edging Wartburg's Colton Wagner, 5-4, in the championship match.
