WAVERLY, IOWA . . . Powered by four players in the top eight of the medalist race, defending champion Wartburg College will take a 24-stroke lead into Saturday's final round of the 2010 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women's Golf Championship at Centennial Oaks Golf Club. Wartburg sophomore Kelsi Sawatzky (77-82-77—236) fired a 5-over-par 77 — the low round of the day — to take an eight-shot lead in the medalist race over Luther's Katie Gaudian (83-78-83—236).
Wartburg holds the 54-hole lead after posting a team total of 322-332-326—980. Central (336-322-346—1004) is second followed by Luther (345-343-351—1,039). Coe (360-356-356—1,072) holds a slim lead for fourth place over Loras (343-357-373—1,073). Buena Vista (358-359-372—1,089), Simpson (362-366-371—1,099), Cornell (391-400-405—1,196) and Dubuque (398-389-423—1,210) round out field.
Individually, Central's Kaurie Kincaid sits third, nine strokes behind Sawatzky at 245, followed by Wartburg's Rebecca Lewis in fourth at 246, 36-hole leader Ali Miller of Central in fifth at 247, and Buena Vista's Kylie Hammer in sixth at 249. Wartburg teammates Jordan Galles (250) and Paige Klostermann (251) are seventh and eighth, respectively, while Luther's Laura Davis (255) and Loras' Abby Potts (256) round out the top ten.
The IIAC Championship concludes Saturday, Oct. 9 at Centenial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly. Tee times begin at 9 a.m. with Simpson, Cornell, and Dubuque teeing off first, followed by Coe, Loras, and Buena Vista, and, finally, players from Wartburg, Central, and Luther. Players within each team will be rearranged according to Friday's 54-hole leaderboard.
