CEDAR FALLS, IOWA . . . Wartburg College’s Daina Deery and Steph Burns jumped out to the first round lead of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women’s Golf Championship, shooting 3-over-par 75s at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club on Friday.

Wartburg College holds the 18-hole lead after firing a 315 with Central College 10 strokes back at 325. Luther College (333) is in third place followed by Simpson College (336). Wartburg’s score is the sixth-best round in IIAC Championship history and the third-best for the Knights at the tournament. Central’s 325 is the fourth-best round at the Championship for the Dutch.

Central’s Sarah Paulson is one stroke behind Deery and Burns in the individual race followed by Central’s Eva Downes with a 79. Luther’s Amy Ekland, Simpson’s Megan Smith, and Wartburg’s Kate Thompson are tied for fifth after posting 81s. A quartet of golfers are tied for eighth with 82s – Simpson’s Taylor Hillery and Katie Vaux, Loras’ Jackie Kieffer, and Luther’s Ellen Miller.

The IIAC Championship continues Saturday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls. Tee times begin at 9:00 a.m. with players from Wartburg, Luther and Central. Loras, Coe, and Simpson golfers will be paired together followed by players from Buena Vista, Cornell and Dubuque.
