Smith is the second pitcher from Buena Vista to earn Pitcher of the Year honors after the award was split in 2008. The right-hander joins Jon Ringblom (2014) as the only Beavers recipients. Prior to the award being split, Buena Vista had four players earn league MVP: Nick Beard (2002), Dale Knight (1980), Jeff Trost (1975, 1976), and Pat McMullen (1970). The Beaver sophomore pitched in six league games, starting in all of them. Smith had a fifth-best ERA in conference contests at 2.80. The Boone prep posted a perfect 6-0 record. In 45.0 innings pitched during league play, Smith allowed his opponents to hit just .297 off him. The Boone native recorded two complete games while surrendering 17 runs and striking out 36 batters.
