Schmitt is just the second Coe men’s basketball student-athlete to garner Defensive Player of the Year accolades joining Adam McDermott from the 2019-20 season. Additionally, two Coe men’s basketball players picked up MVP honors in 2012 (David Mataloni) and 2006 (Mike Kilburg). In his junior season for the Kohawks, Schmitt played in all 16 conference games, averaging 18.3ppg and 1.87 steals per game. The junior guard was second in the league in scoring and tied for first in steals as he recorded 28 steals on the season. Schmitt also stood in the top 5 in the league in field-goal percentage (41.6%) and assists per game (3.8). In addition to his Defensive Player of the Year nod, Schmitt found a spot on the All-Conference team, garnering first team for the third year in a row.
