Kelby Johnson Award Position Player of the Week Week Of 5/24/2021 Sport Baseball School Luther College Year Senior Position Shortstop Hometown Lakeville, Minnesota High School Lakeville South Co-Athlete of the Week – Baseball – Position Player of the Week Kelby Johnson, Luther College Sr., SS, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South Johnson helped guide the Norse to the 2021 A-R-C AQ Tournament championship this last week, moving to shortstop form third base where he had been playing much of the season. The senior’s efforts helped guide Luther to the conference tournament title for a third time and earned a berth to the 2021 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. The NCAA appearance marks the program’s sixth trip to the national tournament. In the conference tournament he batted a stellar .600 (12-for-20), scoring nine runs while driving in six RBIs. He tallied five doubles, one triple, and a home run for a slugging percentage of 1.500. Defensively, the Lakeville, Minn. native recorded a .906 fielding percentage, recording eight put outs and 21 assists. Game 1: Luther 11, Wartburg 5 – 4-for4 (1.000), 3 R, 4 H, 4 RBI, 3B, HR, HBP. Game 2: Luther 9, Simpson 6 – 4-for-5 (.800), 3 R, 4 H, 4 2B. Game 3: Loras 9, Luther 6 – 1-for-5 (.200), R, H, SB. Game 4: Luther 5, Loras 2 – 3-for-4 (.750), 2 R, 3 H, 2B. Game 5: Luther 4, Coe 2 – 0-for-2 (.000), 2 RBI, BB, HBP, SB. Johnson joins teammate Owen Vander Linden as the only other Norse to garner Position Player of the Week honors this season. This mark’s the senior’s second-career Position Player of the Week nod (5/24/21, 4/1/19).
